How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents (12-17 years old weighing 50 kg or more), the usual dose is 1000 mg to 3000 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with enough liquid (e.g., a glass of water). You can take them with or without food. The tablet can be split into two equal halves.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and throat)
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
RARE
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression, hostility or aggression, anxiety, sleeplessness, nervousness or irritability
  • Convulsion, balance disorder, dizziness (feeling unsteady), lethargy (lack of energy and enthusiasm), tremor (uncontrolled shaking)
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness/tiredness
  • Decreased platelet count, decreased white blood cell count
  • Weight loss, weight gain
  • Suicide attempt and suicidal thoughts, mental disorder, abnormal behavior, hallucination, anger, confusion, panic attack, emotional instability/mood changes, agitation
  • Memory loss, impaired memory (forgetfulness), abnormal coordination (clumsiness), tingling skin sensation (pins and needles), attention disorder (difficulty concentrating)
  • Double vision, blurred vision
  • Increased/abnormal liver function tests
  • Hair loss, eczema, itching
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Decrease in all types of blood cells
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS, anaphylactic reaction, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat)
  • Low sodium levels in blood
  • Suicide, personality disorders (behavioral problems), abnormal thinking (slow thinking, difficulty concentrating)
  • Delirium (severe confusion)
  • Signs of severe mental changes, confusion, drowsiness, memory loss, abnormal behavior, or uncontrolled movements (encephalopathy)
  • Seizures may worsen or happen more often
  • Uncontrolled twitching of muscles in the head, torso, and limbs, involuntary movements, excessive muscle activity
  • Change in heart rhythm (visible on ECG)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Liver failure, liver inflammation
  • Sudden kidney problems, with symptoms like low urine output, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and swelling in legs, ankles, or feet.
  • Skin rash with blisters that look like small targets (erythema multiforme), widespread blistering rash and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or severe rash causing skin peeling over a large area (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and increased blood creatine kinase levels related to it
  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • Combination of symptoms: fever, muscle stiffness, unstable blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, low consciousness (can be signs of a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Repeated unwanted thoughts or feelings, or a need to repeat certain actions (obsessive-compulsive disorder)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to levetiracetam or any other ingredients.
  • If you have kidney problems, follow your doctor's instructions as your dose may need to be changed.
  • If you notice your child's growth slowing down or unexpected puberty development, contact your doctor.
  • Some people taking this medicine have had thoughts of harming themselves. If you feel depressed or have thoughts of suicide, contact your doctor.
  • If you or your family have a history of irregular heartbeat, or if you have a condition that increases the risk of heart rhythm problems or electrolyte imbalance.

  • If you notice unusual thoughts, irritability, aggression, or significant changes in your mood or behavior.
  • Seizures may worsen or happen more often, especially during the first month of treatment or when the dose is increased.
  • Do not take macrogol (a laxative) one hour before or after your dose of this medicine, as it can make the medicine less effective.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advice, as it can increase the number of seizures.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
