How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose based on your age and weight. Typically, adults and teenagers take between 5 ml (500 mg) and 15 ml (1500 mg) per dose. For children and infants, the dose is calculated per kilogram of body weight, usually 0.07 ml (7 mg) to 0.3 ml (30 mg) per kg.

Method

Take this medicine twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, around the same time each day. Measure the correct amount with the provided syringe, then mix it with a glass of water or a baby bottle. You can take it with or without food. It might taste a bit bitter.

Important

For adults and teenagers, the maximum daily dose is typically 30 ml (3000 mg). For children and infants, your doctor will calculate the maximum daily dose based on their weight.

  • Mental problems (psychotic disorder), abnormal behavior, hallucinations, anger, confusion, panic attack, mood swings, agitation
  • Amnesia (memory loss), memory impairment, clumsiness (abnormal coordination/ataxia), tingling/numbness (paresthesia), difficulty concentrating (attention disturbance)
  • Double vision (diplopia), blurred vision
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Hair loss (alopecia), eczema, itching
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain (myalgia)
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Decrease in all blood cell types (pancytopenia)
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS, anaphylactic reaction, angioedema - swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat)
  • Low sodium in blood (hyponatremia)
  • Suicide, personality disorders (behavior problems), abnormal thinking (slow thinking, difficulty concentrating)
  • Confusion (delirium)
  • Brain disease (encephalopathy)
  • Seizures worsening or more frequent
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms of head, body, arms and legs; involuntary movements, hyperactivity
  • Changes in heart rhythm (ECG abnormal)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Liver failure, liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Sudden kidney function worsening (acute kidney injury)
  • Severe skin reactions: rash with blisters that look like small targets (erythema multiforme), widespread blistering and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or severe peeling skin on over 30% of the body surface (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) with increased creatine phosphokinase in the blood.
  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • Combination of fever, muscle stiffness, unstable blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, low level of consciousness (may be signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome-like condition).
  • Repetitive unwanted thoughts or urges, or a compulsion to do something over and over (obsessive-compulsive disorder).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to levetiracetam or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • If you notice your child's growth slowing down or unexpected puberty, contact your doctor.
  • Some people taking epilepsy medicines, including this one, have had thoughts of harming themselves. If you experience symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of irregular heart rhythm or if you have a condition that makes you prone to it.

  • If you notice unusual thoughts, irritability, aggression, or significant changes in your mood or behavior, tell your doctor.
  • Your seizures may get worse or happen more often, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Contact your doctor if this happens.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Avoid taking macrogol (a laxative) one hour before or after your levetiracetam dose, as it can make this medicine less effective.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as it can increase the number of seizures.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
  • This medicine contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), maltitol (E965), and benzyl alcohol (1.6 micrograms/ml), which can cause allergic reactions. Maltitol may also be an issue if you have sugar intolerance. Benzyl alcohol in large amounts can accumulate in the body and cause side effects, especially in pregnant/breastfeeding women, or those with liver/kidney disease. It should not be used for more than a week in children under 3 years old without doctor's advice.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider possibility of mental disorders. (updated 6.10.2025)
