How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 13 years old, the typical dose is between 100 mg and 400 mg per day. For children aged 2-12 years, the dose depends on their weight, usually 1-15 mg per kg per day, with a maximum maintenance dose of 200 mg per day.

Method

Take your Lamotrigin Orion dose once or twice a day as prescribed by your doctor. You can take it with or without food. The dispersible tablets can be swallowed whole with a small amount of water, chewed, or dissolved in water. Never drink only part of the dissolved medicine.

Important

Never take more Lamotrigin Orion than your doctor has prescribed.

  • Skin rash
  • Feeling aggressive or irritable
  • Feeling sleepy or tired
  • Dizziness
  • Tremor or shaking
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Feeling agitated
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Feeling tired
  • Back, joint, or other pain
RARE
  • Clumsiness or lack of coordination (ataxia)
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Skin rash or sunburn after sun or artificial light exposure (photosensitivity)
  • Target-like skin rash with red spots or patches with a dark red center (erythema multiforme)
  • Life-threatening skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, stiff neck, and extreme sensitivity to bright light (meningitis)
  • Rapid, uncontrolled eye movements (nystagmus)
  • Itchy, watery eyes and crusty eyelids (conjunctivitis)
  • Life-threatening skin reaction (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome)
  • High fever
  • Swelling of the face (edema) or glands in the neck, armpits, or groin (lymphadenopathy)
  • Changes in liver function (seen in blood tests) or liver failure
  • Severe blood clotting disorder (DIC) causing unexpected bleeding or bruising
  • Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare but very serious immune system reaction
  • Changes in blood tests, such as reduced red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells (leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis), platelets (thrombocytopenia), or all blood cell types (pancytopenia), and bone marrow disorder (aplastic anemia)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't real)
  • Confusion
  • Feeling wobbly or unsteady when moving
  • Uncontrolled repeated body movements and/or sounds or words (tics), uncontrolled muscle spasms affecting eyes, head, and body (choreoathetosis) or other unusual body movements like jerking, shaking, or stiffness
  • More frequent seizures for people already with epilepsy
  • Worsened symptoms for people with Parkinson's disease
  • "Lupus-like" reaction (symptoms may include back pain or joint pain, sometimes with fever and/or general unwellness)
  • Bone disorders like reduced bone density (osteopenia, osteoporosis) and fractures
  • Kidney inflammation (tubulointerstitial nephritis), which may occur with eye inflammation (uveitis)
  • Nightmares
  • Weakened immune system due to lower levels of immunoglobulins (blood cells that help protect against infection)
  • Red nodules or spots on the skin (pseudolymphoma)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Lamotrigin Orion if you are allergic to lamotrigine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • A small number of people taking Lamotrigin Orion may experience a serious allergic reaction or skin rash that can be life-threatening if not treated. Be aware of symptoms like severe skin rashes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or DRESS syndrome).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining) after taking lamotrigine before.
  • Inform your doctor if you have Brugada syndrome or other heart problems, as lamotrigine can cause abnormal heart rhythms.

  • People with bipolar disorder may have suicidal thoughts, especially at the start of treatment, if they have had them before, or if they are under 25 years old. Contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital if you have such thoughts.
  • For some types of epilepsy, seizures may worsen or become more frequent during Lamotrigin Orion treatment. If your seizures become more frequent or severe, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Lamotrigin Orion should not be given to children or adolescents under 18 for bipolar disorder, as medicines for depression and other mental illnesses increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in this age group.
  • Hormonal contraceptives (like birth control pills) can affect how Lamotrigin Orion works. Discuss suitable contraception methods with your doctor if you use or plan to start hormonal contraception.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Do not stop treatment without talking to your doctor. If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
  • Lamotrigin Orion can cause dizziness and double vision. Do not drive or use machines unless you are sure the medicine does not cause these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
