How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight and condition. For adults, the usual starting dose is 50 mg twice a day. Your doctor may slowly increase the dose each week until you reach a stable dose, typically 100-300 mg twice daily. The medicine is taken two times a day, about 12 hours apart.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein by a doctor or nurse, typically lasting 15 to 60 minutes. It is usually used for a short time if you cannot take the medicine by mouth.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 600 mg, taken as 300 mg twice a day.

  • Fast, uncontrolled eye movements
  • Blurred vision
  • Spinning sensation or feeling drunk
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Digestive problems, gas, diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation or sensitivity
  • Difficulty speaking or paying attention
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Drowsiness, tiredness or weakness
  • Itching, rash
  • Pain, discomfort or irritation at the injection site
RARE
  • Slow heartbeat, palpitations, irregular pulse or other changes in heart's electrical activity
  • Feeling overly happy, or seeing/hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Allergic reaction, hives
  • Abnormal liver function tests, liver damage
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide (report to doctor immediately)
  • Anger or agitation
  • Unusual thoughts or feeling detached from reality
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Fainting
  • Abnormal, involuntary movements
  • Redness at the injection site
  • Abnormally fast heartbeat (ventricular tachyarrhythmia)
  • Sore throat, high fever, and more infections than usual. Blood tests may show a severe decrease in certain white blood cells.
  • Severe skin reaction with fever, flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, swollen glands. Blood tests may show increased liver enzymes and a type of white blood cell called eosinophils.
  • Widespread skin rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or a more severe form where over 30% of the skin surface peels off (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Seizures

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, as some people taking epilepsy medicines can have such thoughts.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a certain type of severe heart rhythm problem (second or third-degree AV block). Discuss any heart problems with your doctor.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy or cause falls. Be careful until you know how it affects you, as this can increase your risk of injury.
  • Do not drink alcohol while using Lacosamide Vivanta.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor first, as this can make your seizures worse.
