How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your exact dose. Typically, you start with 50 mg or 100 mg twice a day, and your doctor will slowly increase it. The usual dose is between 100 mg and 300 mg twice a day.

Method

Take the tablets twice a day, about 12 hours apart. Try to take them at the same time each day. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg in one day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Double vision
  • Muscle twitches or jerks
  • Problems with coordination or walking
  • Balance problems, shaking (tremor), tingling, muscle cramps, falling, or bruising easily
  • Memory problems, trouble thinking or finding words, confusion
  • Fast, uncontrolled eye movements (nystagmus), blurred vision
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), feeling drunk
  • Vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, gas, or diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation, difficulty speaking, trouble paying attention
  • Ringing, humming, or whistling in the ears
  • Irritability, trouble sleeping, depression
  • Sleepiness, tiredness, or weakness
  • Itching, rash
  • Fever, runny nose, sore throat, reduced appetite, changes in behavior, unusual behavior, or lack of energy (lethargy) (more common in children)
RARE
  • Slow heart rate, palpitations, irregular pulse, or changes in the heart's electrical activity
  • Feeling overly happy, seeing or hearing things that aren't real
  • Allergic reaction to the medicine, hives
  • Abnormal liver function tests, liver damage
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts: tell your doctor immediately
  • Feelings of anger or agitation
  • Unusual thoughts or feeling disconnected from reality
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Fainting
  • Involuntary movements (dyskinesia)
  • Abnormally fast heart rate (ventricular tachycardia)
  • Sore throat, high fever, and more infections than usual (blood tests may show a severe decrease in certain white blood cells)
  • Severe skin reaction with fever, flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, swollen glands (blood tests may show increased liver enzymes and eosinophils)
  • Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or a more severe form (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Seizures

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to lacosamide or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have certain heart problems, like a very slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat, or if you've had a heart attack. This medicine can affect your heart rhythm.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy and increase your risk of falling. Be careful when moving around until you know how it affects you.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.

  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. This medicine is generally not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness or blurred vision.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
