How to Use

Dosage

Typically, you will start with 50 mg two times a day. Your doctor will slowly increase the dose until it works best for you.

Method

Take tablets two times a day, about 12 hours apart. Swallow with a glass of water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually up to 600 mg when taken alone, or 400 mg when taken with other epilepsy medicines, as prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Double vision
  • Muscle twitching or jerking
  • Problems with coordination or walking
  • Balance problems, trembling, tingling, muscle cramps, falling, or bruising easily
  • Memory problems, trouble thinking or finding words, confusion
  • Fast, uncontrolled eye movements, blurred vision
  • Dizziness (spinning sensation), feeling drunk
  • Vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, gas, or diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation, difficulty speaking, trouble paying attention
  • Ringing, humming, or whistling in the ears
  • Irritability, difficulty sleeping, depression
  • Sleepiness, tiredness, or weakness
  • Itching, rash
RARE
  • Slow heartbeat, palpitations, irregular pulse, or other changes in heart electrical activity (shown on ECG)
  • Feeling overly happy or seeing/hearing things that aren't real
  • Allergic reaction to the medicine, hives
  • Abnormal liver test results, liver damage
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide attempts (tell your doctor right away)
  • Feelings of anger or agitation
  • Unusual thoughts or feeling disconnected from reality
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, throat, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
  • Fainting
  • Uncontrolled movements
  • Abnormally fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia)
  • Sore throat, high fever, and more frequent infections (blood tests may show a severe decrease in certain white blood cells)
  • Severe skin reaction with fever, flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, swollen glands (lymph nodes), abnormal liver enzymes, and increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Widespread skin rash with blisters and peeling, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or a more severe form where over 30% of the body surface peels (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Convulsions (fits)
  • In children, additional side effects observed were fever, runny nose, sore throat, decreased appetite, changes in behavior, unusual behavior, lack of energy, and very common sleepiness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to lacosamide or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a certain type of severe heart rhythm problem (called 2nd or 3rd degree AV block).
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, as epilepsy medicines can increase this risk.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems, such as a very slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat, or if you have had a heart attack or heart failure.
  • Be careful when driving or using machines, as this medicine can make you dizzy or cause blurred vision, increasing the risk of falls.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
