How to Use

Dosage

Typically, start with 50 mg twice a day. Your doctor will slowly increase this to a maintenance dose of 100-300 mg twice a day (when used alone) or 100-200 mg twice a day (with other medicines).

Method

Take the tablets twice a day, about 12 hours apart. Swallow them whole with water, with or without food. Try to take them at roughly the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or feeling sick (nausea)
  • Double vision
  • Muscle twitching or jerking
  • Problems with coordination or walking
  • Balance problems, trembling, tingling, muscle cramps, falls, bruising
  • Memory problems, difficulty thinking or finding words, confusion
  • Fast, uncontrollable eye movements, blurred vision
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), feeling drunk
  • Vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, gas, diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation, difficulty speaking, attention problems
  • Ringing, buzzing, or whistling in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Irritability, sleep problems, depression
  • Sleepiness, tiredness, weakness
  • Itching, rash
  • Fever (common in children)
  • Runny nose (common in children)
  • Sore throat (common in children)
  • Decreased appetite (common in children)
  • Behavior changes, abnormal behavior, lack of energy (common in children)
  • Sleepiness (very common in children)
RARE
  • Slow heartbeat, palpitations, irregular pulse, or other changes in heart's electrical activity
  • Exaggerated feeling of well-being, seeing or hearing things that aren't there
  • Allergic reaction to the medicine, hives
  • Abnormal liver tests, liver damage
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide
  • Anger or agitation
  • Unusual thoughts or feeling detached from reality
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, throat, hands, feet, or ankles
  • Fainting
  • Involuntary movements
  • Abnormally fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia)
  • Sore throat, high fever, more infections than usual (due to a severe decrease in certain white blood cells)
  • Severe skin reaction with fever, flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, swollen glands (lymph nodes), abnormal liver enzymes, and increased eosinophils
  • Widespread rash with blisters and skin peeling, especially around mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or a more severe form where over 30% of skin peels (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Seizures/convulsions

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to lacosamide or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a specific type of heart rhythm problem (2nd or 3rd degree AV block).
  • Talk to your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems affecting your heartbeat, such as a very slow, fast, or irregular pulse, severe heart disease, or if you've had a heart attack.
  • Be careful if you often feel dizzy or fall, as this medicine can cause dizziness and increase the risk of falls.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as stopping suddenly can make your seizures worse.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
