How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 50 mg twice a day. Your doctor may slowly increase this over several weeks to a maintenance dose of 100-300 mg twice a day.

Method

Take the tablets whole with a glass of water, twice a day, about 12 hours apart. You can take them with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or feeling sick (nausea)
  • Double vision
  • Short muscle twitches
  • Difficulty with coordination or walking
  • Balance problems, shaking, tingling, muscle cramps, falling easily or bruising
  • Memory problems, difficulty thinking or finding words, confusion
  • Fast, uncontrolled eye movements, blurred vision
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), feeling drunk
  • Vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, gas, diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation, difficulty speaking, trouble paying attention
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Irritability, sleep problems, depression
  • Sleepiness, tiredness, weakness
  • Itching, rash
RARE
  • Slow heartbeat, palpitations, irregular pulse, or other changes in heart's electrical activity
  • Feeling overly happy, seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Allergic reaction, hives
  • Abnormal liver function tests, liver damage
  • Anger or agitation, unusual thoughts or feeling detached from reality
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, throat, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
  • Fainting
  • Involuntary movements (dyskinesia)
  • Abnormally fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia)
  • Sore throat, high fever, and more infections than usual (due to very low white blood cells)
  • Severe skin reaction with fever, flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, swollen glands, and changes in blood tests (DRESS syndrome)
  • Widespread rash with blisters and skin peeling, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or a more severe form where over 30% of the skin peels (Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis)
  • New or worsening seizures (fits)
  • Fever (additionally observed in children)
  • Runny nose (additionally observed in children)
  • Sore throat (additionally observed in children)
  • Reduced appetite (additionally observed in children)
  • Behavioral changes or unusual behavior (additionally observed in children)
  • Lack of energy (lethargy) (additionally observed in children)

Important Warnings

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact a doctor immediately.
  • If you have heart problems, such as a very slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat, or if you have severe heart disease or have had a heart attack.
  • If you often feel dizzy or fall, as this medicine can increase the risk of accidents.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to lacosamide or any other ingredients, or if you have a specific type of severe heart rhythm problem (2nd or 3rd degree AV block).
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can make your seizures worse.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
