How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 50 mg twice daily. The dose may be increased weekly by 50 mg until a maintenance dose (100-300 mg twice daily) is reached.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an intravenous infusion over 15-60 minutes. Take it twice a day (about 12 hours apart) and try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 600 mg (300 mg twice daily).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Double vision (seeing two of everything)
  • Drowsiness, tiredness, or weakness
RARE
  • Quick muscle twitches or spasms, problems with movement coordination, balance issues, shaking, tingling, muscle cramps, or falls
  • Memory or thinking problems, difficulty finding words, confusion, or feeling disconnected from reality
  • Fast, uncontrolled eye movements, or blurred vision
  • Feeling dizzy (like spinning) or feeling drunk
  • Vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, gas, or diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation or sensitivity, difficulty speaking clearly, or problems paying attention
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • Irritability, sleep problems, depression, extreme happiness, or seeing/hearing things that aren't real (hallucinations)
  • Itching, skin rash, or hives
  • Slow or fast heartbeat, irregular pulse, palpitations, or changes in how your heart's electricity works
  • Fainting
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, throat, hands, feet, or legs)
  • Sore throat, high fever, and more infections than usual (due to changes in white blood cells)
  • Severe skin reactions with widespread rash, blistering, peeling skin, fever, or flu-like symptoms
  • Abnormal liver tests or liver damage
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, anger, agitation, or unusual thoughts
  • Seizures (can be new or worse)
  • Pain, discomfort, irritation, or redness at the injection site (for intravenous infusion)
  • (For children) Runny nose, reduced appetite, or lack of energy

Important Warnings

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, such as a slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat, or if you have severe heart disease or have had a heart attack.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or falls. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to lacosamide or any other ingredient, or if you have a certain type of heart rhythm problem (AV block).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor, to prevent seizures from returning or getting worse.

  • Do not drive, cycle, or use machines until you know how the medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness or blurred vision.
  • Do not drink alcohol with this medicine.
  • Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
