This medicine is used to treat epilepsy by reducing epileptic seizures.
The usual starting dose is 50 mg twice daily. The dose may be increased weekly by 50 mg until a maintenance dose (100-300 mg twice daily) is reached.
A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an intravenous infusion over 15-60 minutes. Take it twice a day (about 12 hours apart) and try to take it at the same time each day.
The maximum recommended daily dose is 600 mg (300 mg twice daily).
Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
