How to Use

Dosage

For severe high blood pressure, doctors usually give 50-200 mg as an injection into a vein or as a drip.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or drip into a vein by a healthcare professional in the hospital. You should lie down during the injection and for three hours afterward to prevent dizziness.

Important

The total dose given as an injection should usually not be more than 200 mg. For continuous drips, your doctor will decide the maximum amount needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Heart failure (your heart cannot pump blood as well as it should)
  • Dizziness when standing up too quickly due to low blood pressure
  • Stuffy nose
  • Higher than normal liver test results (usually go back to normal after stopping medicine)
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
  • Allergic reactions (like rash, itching, or swelling of the skin)
RARE
  • Narrowing of the airways in your lungs, making it harder to breathe
  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)
  • Heart block (problems with the electrical signals that control your heartbeat)
  • Worsening of Raynaud's disease symptoms (cold fingers and toes due to poor blood flow)
  • Liver problems (like hepatitis or jaundice, which makes skin and eyes yellow) that usually go away when the medicine is stopped
  • Nipple pain
  • Raynaud's phenomenon in nipples (numbness, paleness, or pain in the nipples due to reduced blood flow)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to labetalol or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have certain severe heart problems (like heart block, very slow heartbeat, or uncontrolled heart failure).
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure or severe asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, diabetes, or an overactive thyroid.
  • Inform your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery, as this medicine can affect your blood pressure during the operation or your eyes during cataract surgery.
