How to Use

Dosage

Kyleena is a single intrauterine device (IUD) that prevents pregnancy for up to five years.

Method

A healthcare professional will insert Kyleena into your uterus. Once in place, it continuously releases a small amount of hormone to prevent pregnancy.

Important

Kyleena continuously releases a small amount of hormone into your uterus. There is no daily dose you need to take.

Possible Side Effects

  • Changes in menstrual bleeding patterns (e.g., heavier, lighter, irregular, spotting, or no periods)
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Vulva or vaginal inflammation

  • Nausea

  • Menstrual pain
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Kyleena expulsion (device comes out)

RARE
  • Increased body hair
  • Depression or depressed mood
  • Uterine perforation (Kyleena pushes through the uterine wall)
  • Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus)
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., rash, hives, swelling of tongue, lips, face, or throat)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Kyleena if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
  • Do not use Kyleena if you have a pelvic infection (in the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes), vaginal or cervical infection, or if you have had these often.
  • Do not use Kyleena if you had a uterine infection in the last 3 months after childbirth, abortion, or miscarriage.
  • Do not use Kyleena if you have an abnormal Pap test result, or have or are suspected to have cervical or uterine cancer, or a tumor that grows due to progesterone hormones (like some breast cancers).
  • Do not use Kyleena if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, an unusually shaped uterus (e.g., due to fibroids), or liver disease/tumor.

  • Do not use Kyleena if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any other ingredients in Kyleena.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have signs of pregnancy (like a missed period, nausea, breast tenderness) along with pain, vaginal bleeding, or dizziness. These could be signs of an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus).
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have abdominal pain, fever, unusual vaginal discharge, or pain during sex. These could be signs of an infection.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have severe pain, very heavy bleeding, or if you can no longer feel the Kyleena threads. These could be signs that Kyleena has moved or perforated the uterus.
  • If you experience mood changes or symptoms of depression, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
  • If you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, or swelling of your tongue, lips, face, or throat, seek immediate medical attention.
