Colistimethate Sodium Noridem is an antibiotic inhaled to treat chronic lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients caused by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, adolescents, and children aged 2 years and above, the typical dose is 1–2 million units two or three times daily. For children under 2 years, the typical dose is 0.5–1 million units twice daily.

Method

This medicine is inhaled into the lungs using a nebuliser.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 6 million units for those aged 2 years and above, and 2 million units for children under 2 years.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cough
  • Feeling of tightness in the chest due to narrowing of the airways
  • Soreness in the mouth or throat
  • Oral or throat thrush (a fungal infection)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, including sudden rash, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing due to narrowed airways, and loss of consciousness. If these occur, stop use and seek immediate medical attention.
  • Milder allergic reactions like skin rash, appearing later during treatment.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to colistimethate sodium, colistin, or other polymyxins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis (a disease causing muscle weakness).
  • Tell your doctor if you have porphyria.
  • Tell your doctor if you have asthma.

  • Some people may feel chest tightness due to narrowing of the airways when inhaling this medicine. Your doctor might prescribe other inhaled medicines to prevent or treat this. These should be taken before or after using this medicine.
  • Special care is needed when using this medicine in premature and newborn babies, as their kidneys are not yet fully developed.
  • If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, confusion, or blurred vision. If this happens, do not drive or use tools or machines.
