Colistimethate sodium is an antibiotic used to treat severe infections caused by certain bacteria when other antibiotics are not suitable.
Adults usually take 9 million units per day, split into 2 or 3 doses. Children under 40 kg take 75,000-150,000 units per kg per day, split into three doses.
This medicine is given as an infusion (drip) over 30-60 minutes or as an injection over at least 5 minutes, usually into a vein. In some cases, it can be given into the spinal fluid or brain chamber. For home use, your doctor or nurse will teach you how to prepare and give the dose.
The maximum daily dose for adults is 12 million units. For children, doses above 150,000 units per kg per day have been used in cystic fibrosis, but your doctor will determine the exact maximum for your child.
