How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 9 million units per day, split into 2 or 3 doses. Children under 40 kg take 75,000-150,000 units per kg per day, split into three doses.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion (drip) over 30-60 minutes or as an injection over at least 5 minutes, usually into a vein. In some cases, it can be given into the spinal fluid or brain chamber. For home use, your doctor or nurse will teach you how to prepare and give the dose.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 12 million units. For children, doses above 150,000 units per kg per day have been used in cystic fibrosis, but your doctor will determine the exact maximum for your child.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Numbness or tingling, especially around the face.
  • Dizziness or loss of balance.
  • Sudden changes in blood pressure or blood flow, including weakness and flushed face.
  • Slurred speech, vision problems, confusion, or mental changes.
  • Irritation at the injection site.
  • Kidney problems (often improve when treatment is stopped or dose is lowered).
  • Mild skin rash.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction: sudden rash, swelling of face, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulties, or loss of consciousness (seek medical help immediately).
  • Severe breathing difficulties due to muscle paralysis in the chest (seek medical help immediately).
  • Muscle cramps, increased urination, or tiredness (these could be signs of pseudo-Bartter syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to colistimethate sodium, colistin, or other polymyxins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), porphyria, or asthma.
  • If you get muscle cramps, feel tired, or notice increased urination, tell your doctor right away. These could be signs of a rare condition called pseudo-Bartter syndrome.
  • Special care is needed for premature and newborn babies because their kidneys are not fully developed.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
