Colistimethate sodium is an antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by certain bacteria, especially when other antibiotics are not effective.
For adults, the usual daily dose is 9 million units, divided into 2 or 3 doses. Children up to 40 kg typically receive 75,000–150,000 units per kg daily, divided into three doses.
This medicine is given by injection into a vein (over at least 5 minutes) or as a slow infusion into a vein (over 30-60 minutes). In some cases, it may be given directly into the brain or spinal fluid.
The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 12 million units. For children, your doctor will determine the appropriate maximum dose.
