How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual daily dose is 9 million units, divided into 2 or 3 doses. Children up to 40 kg typically receive 75,000–150,000 units per kg daily, divided into three doses.

Method

This medicine is given by injection into a vein (over at least 5 minutes) or as a slow infusion into a vein (over 30-60 minutes). In some cases, it may be given directly into the brain or spinal fluid.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 12 million units. For children, your doctor will determine the appropriate maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Irritation, redness, or pain at the injection site.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions like rash, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing (seek medical help immediately).
  • Muscle cramps, feeling very tired, or urinating more than usual.
  • Numbness or tingling (especially in the face), dizziness, loss of balance, or sudden changes in blood pressure (feeling weak or flushed).
  • Slurred speech, vision problems, confusion, or strange thoughts.
  • Kidney problems, which may include less urine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to colistimethate sodium, colistin, or other polymyxin antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), porphyria (a rare blood disorder), or asthma.
  • If you get muscle cramps, feel very tired, or urinate more than usual, tell your doctor right away.
  • If you have trouble breathing, get help from a doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy, confused, or have vision problems. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these effects.
