Klacid is an antibiotic containing clarithromycin, used to treat bacterial infections like respiratory, skin, and mycobacterial infections by stopping bacteria from growing.

How to Use

Dosage

Usually 1.0 gram per day, divided into two doses.

Method

The medicine is given as an intravenous drip (infusion) into a vein over 60 minutes, not as a direct injection into a muscle.

Important

Maximum 1.0 gram per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation or pain at the injection site.
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion.
  • Headache, sleeplessness.
  • Changes in taste, increased sweating.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Widened blood vessels.
  • Rash.
RARE
  • Various infections, such as stomach, intestinal, skin, mouth, or vaginal infections.
  • Decreased or changed white blood cell counts.
  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, itching, and hives.
  • Decreased appetite, anxiety, nervousness.
  • Fainting, dizziness, tremor, sleepiness, ringing in the ears, vertigo, ear problems.
  • Weakness, chest pain, facial swelling, general malaise, pain, thirst, chills, fatigue, fever.
  • Changes in heart rhythm, abnormal heart ECG readings (prolonged QT interval).
  • Asthma, shortness of breath, nosebleed.
  • Constipation, rectal pain, dry mouth, gas/flatulence, heartburn, stomach inflammation (gastritis), mouth inflammation (stomatitis), tongue inflammation (glossitis).
  • Muscle pain, muscle cramps.
  • Severe skin reactions such as blisters on the skin, mouth, lips, eyes or genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) or red, scaly rash. Seek medical help immediately.
  • Loss of appetite, yellow skin, dark urine, itching, or stomach tenderness, which may be signs of liver failure. Seek medical help immediately.
  • Muscle pain or weakness, rhabdomyolysis (muscle tissue breakdown, which can lead to kidney damage). Seek medical help immediately.
  • Mental health problems, such as unusual dreams, confusion, loss of sense of reality, hallucinations, depression, or mania.
  • Seizures, loss of taste, changes or loss of smell, tingling.
  • Deafness.
  • Ventricular fibrillation (irregular heart beat).
  • Bleeding.
  • Kidney problems, such as kidney inflammation or blood in urine.
  • Sudden pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting).
  • Tongue or teeth discoloration.
  • Acne.
  • Low blood counts (symptoms like paleness and fatigue) and low levels of certain blood elements (sore throat, fever, bruising).
  • Muscle weakness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to clarithromycin or other similar antibiotics.
  • Do not use if you have certain heart rhythm problems or take medicines that can cause serious heart rhythm problems.
  • Do not use if you take migraine medicines (ergot alkaloids) or anxiety/sleep medicines (midazolam) taken by mouth.
  • Do not use if you have low potassium or magnesium levels in your blood.
  • Do not use if you take cholesterol-lowering medicines (like lovastatin or simvastatin).

  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Do not use if you take a gout medicine called colchicine.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience severe or prolonged diarrhea during or after use.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D
