How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your starting dose. The usual daily dose ranges from 150 mg to 800 mg, depending on your condition.

Method

Take the tablets once a day. Do not break, chew, or crush them; swallow whole with water. Take without food, at least 1 hour before a meal or at bedtime, as advised by your doctor.

Important

Do not exceed the daily dose your doctor prescribes, usually up to 800 mg.

Possible Side Effects

  • Dizziness (can lead to falls)
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness (can lead to falls)
  • Withdrawal symptoms (like trouble sleeping, feeling sick, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and irritability) if stopping the medicine too quickly
  • Weight gain
  • Abnormal muscle movements (difficulty starting movements, shaking, restlessness, or stiffness without pain)
  • Changes in certain blood fat levels (triglycerides and total cholesterol)
  • Fast heartbeat, palpitations (feeling your heart beat fast or unevenly)
  • Constipation, upset stomach (indigestion)
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Low blood pressure (especially when standing up, causing dizziness or fainting)
  • High blood sugar
  • Blurred vision
  • Strange dreams or nightmares
  • Increased appetite
  • Irritability
  • Speech and language problems
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting (more common in older people)
  • Fever
  • Changes in thyroid hormone levels in blood tests
  • Decreased number of certain white blood cells in blood tests
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Increased prolactin hormone levels in the blood (can cause breast swelling, unexpected milk production, or irregular periods in women)
  • Nasal congestion
RARE
  • Seizures or fits (epilepsy)
  • Allergic reactions (hives, swelling of skin, mouth, or tongue)
  • Unpleasant feeling in the legs (restless legs syndrome)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Uncontrolled movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Sexual problems
  • Diabetes
  • Changes in heart's electrical activity (QT prolongation on ECG)
  • Slower-than-normal heart rate (can occur at start of treatment, linked to low blood pressure or fainting)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Fainting (can lead to falls)
  • Decreased red blood cells in blood tests
  • Decreased sodium in blood tests
  • Worsening diabetes
  • Confusion
  • Severe combination of symptoms: fever, sweating, stiff muscles, strong drowsiness or fainting (malignant neuroleptic syndrome)
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Long-lasting, painful erection (priapism)
  • Breast swelling and unexpected milk production (galactorrhoea)
  • Menstrual problems
  • Blood clots in veins (especially in legs, causing swelling, pain, redness); can travel to lungs (chest pain, breathing difficulty)
  • Sleepwalking, talking, eating, or other activities during sleep
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
  • Metabolic syndrome (a combination of belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar)
  • Increased creatine phosphokinase (a substance from muscles) in blood tests
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock)
  • Rapid swelling of the skin, usually around the eyes, lips, or throat (angioedema)
  • Abnormal secretion of a hormone that regulates urine volume
  • Muscle fiber breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
  • Heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis)
  • Blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis), often with red or purple spots on the skin
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborns if the mother used Ketipinor during late pregnancy
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., widespread rash with blisters or peeling skin)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Ketipinor if you are allergic to quetiapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Ketipinor if you are taking certain medicines for HIV, specific antifungal medicines (azoles), antibiotics like erythromycin or clarithromycin, or the antidepressant nefazodone.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking Ketipinor, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • Be careful with alcohol, as Ketipinor and alcohol together can make you sleepy.
  • Do not use Ketipinor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without discussing it with your doctor first.

  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Do not stop taking your tablets even if you feel better, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Ketipinor should not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, severe muscle stiffness, sweating, or decreased consciousness all at once (signs of a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled movements, especially of your face or tongue.
  • Inform your doctor if you experience a prolonged and painful erection (priapism).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have a fast and irregular heartbeat, even at rest, palpitations, breathing difficulties, chest pain, or unexplained tiredness; your heart needs to be checked.
  • Tell your doctor if you get a fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, or any other infection, as this could mean you have very low white blood cells, and Ketipinor treatment might need to be stopped.
  • Inform your doctor if you have constipation and long-lasting stomach pain, or constipation that doesn't get better with treatment, as these could be signs of a serious bowel blockage.
  • If you are depressed, you might sometimes have thoughts of harming yourself or taking your own life; contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately if you have these thoughts.
  • Very rarely, severe skin reactions like widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, fever, or swollen lymph nodes can occur; if you notice such symptoms, stop using Ketipinor and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Weight gain can occur with Ketipinor; you and your doctor should regularly monitor your weight.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Inappropriate as a hypnotic. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 15.1.2024)
