How to Use

Dosage

For mild infections, the recommended dose is 50 mg per kg of body weight per day. Your doctor will tell you the exact amount.

Method

Shake the bottle well before each use. Take this medicine by mouth as directed by your doctor. Finish the entire course of medicine even if you feel better.

Important

The daily dose (typically 50 mg/kg for mild infections) can be divided into 2 or 3 doses as prescribed by your doctor. Do not exceed the dose your doctor has given you.

  • Widespread rash with pus-filled bumps
  • Itching in genital and anal areas
  • Unspecified vaginal or vulvar inflammation
  • Low platelet count
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Anemia from red blood cell breakdown
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Toxic psychosis
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Mouth inflammation
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Intestinal inflammation (pseudomembranous colitis)
  • Slow bowel movement
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Severe skin conditions (Lyell's syndrome, pemphigus vulgaris, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, widespread rash with fever and blisters)
  • Joint inflammation (arthritis)
  • Kidney inflammation with blood in urine

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to cefalexin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to other cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Do not take if you have had a severe, immediate allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillin).
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a rash or other allergic symptoms with penicillin or other antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe skin peeling, blistering, or mouth sores after taking cefalexin or other antibiotics.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had inflammation of the stomach or bowels (colitis).
  • Tell your doctor if you have acute porphyria (a rare metabolic disease).
  • If you develop a severe, widespread rash with fever and blisters (AGEP), stop taking Kefexin and contact your doctor or seek medical help immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
