How to Use

Dosage

For prevention, usually 1-2 tablets, 2-3 times a day. For treatment of low potassium, your doctor will decide the dose, often starting with 2 tablets, 2-3 times a day until your potassium level improves, then 1-2 tablets twice a day.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with at least one glass of water. Do not lie down or take them just before bed. You can take them with food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 6 tablets, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Higher than normal potassium levels in the blood.
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
  • Vomiting.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Different types of skin rashes.
  • Serious gut issues (like tears, bleeding, ulcers, or blockages in the digestive tract).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe fluid and salt imbalance, such as high potassium levels in your blood (hyperkalemia), or other conditions that can cause high potassium.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you have ulcers or narrowings in your esophagus or intestines.
  • Do not take if you have untreated Addison's disease (a problem with your adrenal glands).

  • Stop taking this medicine if you feel sick, vomit, or have stomach discomfort.
  • Kaliumklorid Sandoz should not be used in children or teenagers under 18 years of age.
  • Be careful if you are taking medicines that slow down your bowel movements.
  • If you have heart or kidney disease, your potassium levels must be checked regularly.
  • If you are elderly, you are at a higher risk of heart and kidney disease.
  • Be careful if you have an increased risk of high potassium due to kidney or adrenal gland problems, severe dehydration, or widespread tissue damage (like severe burns).
  • Taking too much can lead to very high potassium levels, especially if you have kidney disease. Symptoms include confusion, tingling, muscle weakness, paralysis, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and in severe cases, heart attack. Contact a doctor immediately if you take too much.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider risk of hyperkalaemia in patiets with impaired renal function. The tablet must be swallowed whole. Monitor potassium concentrations. Consider potential interactions medicines affecting potassium homeostasis. (updated 10.6.2024)
