Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Pain, irritation, or inflammation at the infusion site, or fluid leaking into tissues
RARE
  • Buildup of acidic substances in the blood (acidosis)
  • Abnormally high chloride levels in the blood (hyperchloremia)
  • Irregular heartbeat, especially if the medicine is given too quickly
  • Slow heart rate or even cardiac arrest
  • Changes on the electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Poor circulation in the limbs, with blood flow concentrating in the head and torso
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Heavy feeling in arms and legs
  • Muscle twitching
  • Impaired sensation (numbness or tingling)
  • Paralysis

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if your blood potassium or chloride levels are already too high.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or Addison's disease, which affects how potassium leaves your body.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that affect how potassium leaves your body (e.g., certain diuretics or blood pressure medicines).
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that can affect your kidney function (e.g., certain anti-inflammatory pain medicines).
