How to Use

Dosage

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip (infusion) directly into a vein.

Important

The infusion is typically given slowly over 12-24 hours per day; your doctor will ensure you receive the correct amount.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slightly increased body temperature
  • Inflammation where the infusion enters the vein
RARE
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (your doctor will tell you if this happens)
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Prolonged, painful erection in men
  • Changes in blood values
  • Allergic skin rash (bumpy and itchy)
  • Very high fever (as part of allergic reaction)
  • Severe breathing difficulties (as part of allergic reaction)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any of Kabiven Perifer's ingredients, or to eggs, soy, or peanuts.
  • Do not use if you have too much fat (like cholesterol) in your blood, severe liver problems, or are in acute shock.
  • Do not use if you have a blood clotting disorder, severe kidney problems, very high blood sugar requiring more than 6 units of insulin per hour, or high salt (electrolyte) levels.
  • Do not use if you have too much acid or fluid in your body, fluid in your lungs, are in a coma, have heart disease, are severely dehydrated with low salt levels, or have severe blood poisoning (sepsis).
  • Tell your doctor before using this medicine if you have pancreatic disease, thyroid problems, if your body cannot remove salts properly, if your cells lack oxygen, or if you have high osmotic pressure in your blood.

  • If you get a fever, rash, chills, or difficulty breathing during the infusion, tell the medical staff immediately as these could be signs of an allergic reaction or overdose.
  • This medicine can affect results of other lab tests, so always inform your doctor or the person doing the tests that you are using Kabiven Perifer.
  • Kabiven Perifer is not suitable for newborns or children under 2 years of age.
