How to Use

Dosage

Your anesthesiologist will decide the right dose for you based on your age, weight, and the type of surgery.

Method

It is given as a vapor to breathe in, usually through a mask after another anesthetic injection, or sometimes directly through a mask until you fall asleep.

Important

The anesthesiologist will control the dose and stop it after your surgery.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Muscle spasms in your lungs and airways, making it hard to breathe.
  • Increased levels of potassium and sugar in your blood.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm.
RARE
  • Increased levels of carboxyhemoglobin in your blood.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction).
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Agitation (restlessness, excessive movements), mood changes.
  • Confusion, seizures, decreased mental ability.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Abnormal heart tracing (ECG), prolonged QT interval.
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat (including a specific type of fast heartbeat called Torsade de Pointes).
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Bleeding.
  • Slow and shallow breathing.
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing.
  • Throat muscle cramps (laryngospasm).
  • Swelling of the face.
  • Contact skin rash (dermatitis).
  • Rash.
  • Increased blood creatinine levels.
  • Decreased blood urea levels.
  • Increased blood creatine kinase levels.
  • Bowel obstruction (muscles in your gut may temporarily stop working, causing discomfort, swelling, and vomiting).
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Liver dysfunction, including liver damage or liver cell death.
  • Increased blood bilirubin levels.
  • Tremors, chills.
  • High body temperature due to malignant hyperthermia.
  • Chest discomfort.
  • Abnormal levels of certain blood cells or substances.
  • Increased fluoride levels in blood (as your body breaks down isoflurane).
  • Abnormal EEG (brain wave) results.
  • Myoglobin in urine (a substance from muscles).
  • Muscle damage.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to isoflurane or other anesthetics.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member has a condition called malignant hyperthermia, where body temperature rises dangerously during or after surgery.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a cell disorder called mitochondrial disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), or any other liver disease.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy, or suspect you are pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
