Iqtopam is a medicine that contains clonazepam, a benzodiazepine, used to prevent seizures and relax the body, primarily for various forms of epilepsy in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older.

How to Use

Dosage

The dosage is individual and determined by your doctor, depending on your age and how well the medicine works for you.

Method

The medicine is given slowly as an injection or infusion (drip) directly into a vein. It can also be given as an injection into a muscle if your doctor deems it necessary.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced ability to concentrate
  • Drowsiness
  • Slow reactions
  • Weak muscle tone
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue (tiredness, apathy)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Problems with coordination and walking (ataxia)
  • Rapid involuntary eye movements
RARE
  • Bleeding from skin and mucous membranes, and bruising due to low platelet count in blood (thrombocytopenia)
  • Decreased sexual desire
  • Headache
  • Nausea, upper abdominal pain
  • Hives, itching, rash, temporary hair loss, changes in skin pigmentation
  • Inability to hold urine (incontinence)
  • Inability for men to maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction)
  • Severe acute allergic reactions (anaphylactic reaction), including symptoms like widespread itching and hives, swelling, wheezing and breathing difficulties, fainting, and/or other allergic symptoms.
  • Worsening of existing epilepsy or new seizures
  • Heart failure, including cardiac arrest
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Vein inflammation or blood clot (thrombosis)
  • Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction)
  • Emotional problems, mood changes, confusion, depression, and unusual reactions like irritability, aggression, anxiety, sleep problems, nightmares, hallucinations, extreme activity, or other changes in behavior.
  • Inability to form new memories and memory loss, sometimes linked to inappropriate behavior.
  • Dependence and withdrawal symptoms
  • Double vision
  • Speech difficulties (organic speech disorder)
  • Risk of falls and fractures

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to clonazepam, other benzodiazepines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, as this medicine can worsen them.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have a drug, substance, or alcohol dependence.
  • Do not use for children under 12 years of age.

  • Do not give Iqtopam to patients in a coma.
  • Do not drink alcohol while using this medicine, as it can cause severe drowsiness and breathing problems.
  • This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy because it can affect the unborn baby.
  • Breastfeeding should be stopped during treatment with this medicine.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after receiving this medicine, especially during the first few days, as it can slow your reactions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 6.10.2025)
