How to Use

Method

This medicine is given as an injection under the skin only once a week.

Important

Never exceed the weekly dose prescribed by your doctor, as this medicine is only taken once a week.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mouth sores, indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Mouth ulcers, diarrhea
  • Rash, skin redness, itching
  • Headache, tiredness, drowsiness
  • Reduced blood cell production, including low white and/or red blood cells and/or platelets
RARE
  • Sore throat
  • Intestinal inflammation, vomiting, pancreatitis, black or tarry stools, stomach/intestinal ulcers and bleeding
  • Sunburn-like reactions due to increased sun sensitivity, hair loss, increased rheumatoid nodules, skin ulcers, shingles, vasculitis, herpes-like rash, hives
  • Onset of adult-onset diabetes
  • Dizziness, confusion, depression
  • Decreased serum albumin
  • Decrease in all blood cells and platelets
  • Bladder or vaginal inflammation and ulcers, impaired kidney function, urination problems
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, bone mass reduction
  • Persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever; these can indicate lung inflammation
  • Spitting or coughing up blood; these can be signs of lung bleeding
  • Symptoms of liver damage, such as yellow skin and whites of the eyes
  • Allergic reactions, including red and itchy rash; swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth or throat (which can cause difficulty swallowing or breathing) and feeling faint
  • Symptoms of kidney damage, such as swelling of hands, ankles or feet, changes in urination frequency, or reduced urine output
  • Signs of infection, such as fever, chills, body aches, sore throat
  • Symptoms like weakness on one side of the body (stroke) or pain, swelling, redness, and unusual warmth in one leg (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Fever and severe general weakness, or sudden fever with sore throat/mouth pain or urination problems
  • Unexpected bleeding, e.g., from gums, blood in urine, vomiting blood, or bruising
  • Symptoms like severe headache, often with fever, stiff neck, feeling unwell, vomiting, disorientation, and light sensitivity
  • Certain brain disorders (changes in mental state, movement problems (ataxia), vision or memory problems)
  • Severe rash or skin blisters (may also appear in the mouth, eyes, and genitals)
  • Gum inflammation
  • Increased skin pigmentation, acne, blue spots on the skin from bleeding, allergic vasculitis
  • Reduced blood antibodies
  • Infection (including reactivation of inactive chronic infection), conjunctivitis (red eye)
  • Mood swings
  • Vision problems
  • Inflammation of the pericardium, fluid accumulation around the heart, compression of the heart due to fluid in the pericardium
  • Low blood pressure
  • Lung fibrosis, shortness of breath and asthma, fluid accumulation in the lung cavity
  • Stress fracture
  • Electrolyte imbalances
  • Fever, impaired wound healing
  • Acute toxic enlargement of the colon (toxic megacolon)
  • Increased nail pigmentation, nail fold inflammation (acute paronychia), deep hair follicle infection (furunculosis), visible widening of capillaries
  • Local damage at injection site (sterile abscess formation, changes in fatty tissue) after intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
  • Pain, loss of strength or sensation, numbness or tingling / lower-than-normal response to stimulation, taste changes (metallic taste), convulsions, paralysis, meningism
  • Vision loss, non-inflammatory eye disease (retinopathy)
  • Loss of libido, impotence, breast enlargement in men, sperm production disorder (oligospermia), menstrual cycle disorder, vaginal discharge
  • Enlarged lymph nodes (lymphoma)
  • Lymphoproliferative disorders (overgrowth of white blood cells)
  • Increased number of certain white blood cells
  • Nosebleeds
  • Protein in urine
  • Feeling of weakness
  • Bleeding from the lungs
  • Jaw bone damage (due to overgrowth of white blood cells)
  • Skin redness and peeling
  • Swelling
  • Tissue damage at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • You are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • You have severe liver, kidney, or blood diseases.
  • You regularly drink large amounts of alcohol.
  • You have a severe infection, such as tuberculosis, HIV, or another immune deficiency syndrome.
  • You have mouth sores, stomach ulcers, or intestinal ulcers.

  • You are getting live vaccines at the same time.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are elderly or generally unwell and feel weak.
  • Your liver function is impaired.
  • You are dehydrated.
  • You have diabetes mellitus and are on insulin therapy.
  • You cough or spit blood; contact your doctor immediately as this could be a sign of lung bleeding.
  • If you are a woman, avoid becoming pregnant during treatment and for at least six months after stopping it.
  • If you are a man, avoid fathering a child during treatment and for at least three months after stopping it.
  • If you notice new or worsening neurological symptoms like muscle weakness, vision changes, or problems with thinking, memory, or confusion, contact your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of a rare brain inflammation (PML).
  • Avoid strong sunlight and solariums, as this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • Avoid large amounts of alcohol, coffee, caffeinated soft drinks, and black tea during treatment.
  • Stop breastfeeding before and during Injexate treatment.
  • This medicine can cause tiredness or dizziness, so do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
