Method

Injexate is given as an injection under the skin once a week.

Important

This medicine must only be taken once a week. Taking too much can be fatal.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sores in your mouth or throat
  • Upset stomach, feeling sick (nausea), losing your appetite, stomach pain
  • Changes in liver blood tests (your doctor will check these)
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash, red skin, itching
  • Headache, feeling tired or sleepy
  • Fewer blood cells (white, red, or platelets – your doctor will check these)
RARE
  • Serious infections (like pneumonia), fever, chills, body aches, sore throat
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face/throat, trouble breathing, feeling faint)
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes)
  • Kidney problems (swelling in hands/feet, changes in how often you pee)
  • Blood clots, stroke-like symptoms (weakness on one side, pain, swelling in a leg)
  • Severe skin reactions (bad rashes or blisters, even in mouth or eyes)
  • Hair loss, skin sores, shingles
  • Dizziness, confusion, depression
  • Vision changes
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Swelling or tissue damage at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or blood diseases.
  • Do not use if you have a serious infection (like tuberculosis or HIV) or a weakened immune system.
  • Do not use if you have mouth or stomach ulcers.
  • Do not get live vaccines during treatment with Injexate.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant. Men should avoid fathering a child for at least 3 months after treatment, and women for at least 6 months after treatment, due to potential risks to the baby.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are elderly, feel generally unwell, have liver problems, are dehydrated, or have diabetes.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you cough or spit up blood.
  • Attend all regular doctor appointments and blood tests, as serious side effects can occur even at low doses.
  • Avoid strong sunlight and use sun protection, as your skin may become more sensitive.
  • Do not inject yourself without proper training from a healthcare professional.
  • Do not use Injexate if you notice any changes in the solution's color or visible particles.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
