How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, which is adjusted for you individually.

Method

Injexate is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneously).

Important

This medicine is taken only once a week. Taking it more often can be very dangerous or even fatal.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mouth sores or inflammation in the mouth lining
  • Upset stomach, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Skin rash, redness, itching
  • Headache
  • Tiredness or drowsiness
  • Fewer white or red blood cells, or platelets
  • Persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever (possible lung inflammation)
RARE
  • Throat or gut inflammation
  • Vomiting, pancreatitis, black/tarry stools, gut ulcers and bleeding, severe gut swelling
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sun, hair loss, skin ulcers, shingles, herpes-like rash, hives, increased skin pigmentation, acne, bruises from bleeding under skin, nail changes, deep skin infections, visible small blood vessels, very serious skin rashes/blisters (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • New onset of diabetes
  • Confusion, depression, mood changes
  • Vision problems
  • Low blood protein (albumin)
  • Severe drop in all types of blood cells or platelets
  • Bladder or vaginal inflammation/sores, kidney problems, trouble urinating, kidney failure (swelling, changes in urine)
  • Joint, muscle, or bone pain, bone thinning
  • Gum inflammation
  • Allergic blood vessel inflammation, fewer antibodies in blood, red eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Infections (including old ones returning)
  • Heart problems (inflammation or fluid around the heart, low blood pressure)
  • Lung scarring, asthma, fluid in lungs
  • Bone fracture, electrolyte imbalances, fever, slow wound healing
  • Pain, numbness, tingling, paralysis, seizures, metallic taste (nerve problems)
  • Injection site damage (pain, swelling, infection)
  • Changes in sex drive, impotence, male breast growth, irregular periods, vaginal discharge
  • Swollen lymph nodes, unusual growth of white blood cells
  • Coughing or spitting blood (lung bleeding)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (liver failure)
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, fainting)
  • Kidney damage (swelling, changes in urine)
  • Blood clots in legs (pain, swelling, redness)
  • Sudden high fever with sore throat/mouth, easy bruising/bleeding (severe blood problems)
  • Severe headache with stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, confusion, light sensitivity (brain lining inflammation)
  • Brain conditions (changes in thinking, movement, memory)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredients in Injexate.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or blood problems.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol.
  • Do not use if you have a serious infection (like tuberculosis or HIV) or a weakened immune system.
  • Do not use if you have open sores in your mouth, stomach, or intestines.

  • Do not get vaccinated with live vaccines during your treatment.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Women must use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 6 months after stopping Injexate.
  • Men must avoid fathering a child during treatment and for at least 3 months after stopping Injexate.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you cough up or spit blood.
  • If you experience severe diarrhea, tell your doctor; treatment might need to be stopped.
  • Your skin may become sensitive to the sun. Avoid strong sunlight, sunbeds, and sunlamps.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel tired or dizzy.
  • Your doctor will perform regular tests to check for side effects, even when using low doses.
  • Avoid large amounts of coffee, caffeinated soft drinks, and black tea.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
