How to Use

Dosage

One dose is 0.5 ml.

Method

The vaccine is given as an injection into a muscle or under the skin; in the thigh for infants and young children, and in the upper arm for older children and adults.

Important

This vaccine is given according to a vaccination schedule, not daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Redness at the injection site
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Swelling at the injection site
  • Fever
RARE
  • Headache
  • Skin reactions, such as rash or hives
  • Allergic reactions, sometimes severe
  • Mild and temporary joint or muscle pain
  • Tingling (numbness or prickling sensation)
  • Short-term seizures or fever convulsions
  • Restlessness
  • Drowsiness
  • Irritability
  • Lymph node disease (swollen lymph nodes)
  • Temporary stop in breathing (apnea) in very premature babies
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as itching, skin reactions, swelling, shortness of breath, or anaphylactic shock. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient in Imovax Polio.
  • Do not use if you or your child has previously had a severe reaction to Imovax Polio or a similar vaccine.
  • If you or your child has a high fever or an acute illness, vaccination should be postponed. Talk to your doctor if you have a mild infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child is allergic to the antibiotics neomycin, streptomycin, or polymyxin B.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has bleeding problems, such as low platelet count, as bleeding may occur after the injection.

  • If your or your child's immune system is weak, the vaccine may not work as well.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you or your child has fainted before from a needle injection.
