How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide how much Imipenem/Cilastatin Noridem you need. Typically, for adults and adolescents, the recommended dose is 500 mg/500 mg every 6 hours or 1000 mg/1000 mg every 6–8 hours. For children aged one year and older, the dose is 15 mg/15 mg or 25 mg/25 mg per kg body weight every 6 hours. Your doctor might change your dose if you have kidney problems.

Method

The medicine is given as an infusion into a vein. Doses up to 500 mg/500 mg are given over 20–30 minutes, and doses over 500 mg/500 mg are given over 40–60 minutes. If you start to feel unwell during the infusion, the rate can be slowed down.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you. For adults, this is generally up to 4000 mg per day, and for children, the doctor will calculate the dose based on their weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Nausea and vomiting are more common in patients with low white blood cell counts.
  • Swelling, redness, and pain along the vein at the injection site.
  • Skin rash.
  • Abnormal liver test results.
  • Increase in certain white blood cells.
RARE
  • Local skin redness.
  • Local pain and hardening at the injection site.
  • Itching.
  • Hives.
  • Fever.
  • Blood disorders affecting blood cells (like tiredness, pale skin, and bruising).
  • Abnormal kidney, liver, and other blood test results.
  • Tremors and uncontrolled muscle twitching.
  • Seizures.
  • Mental disorders (like mood changes and impaired judgment).
  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there).
  • Confusion.
  • Dizziness, drowsiness.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fungal infection (candidiasis).
  • Staining of teeth and/or tongue.
  • Inflammation of the large intestine with severe diarrhea or bloody diarrhea.
  • Taste disturbances.
  • Liver dysfunction or inflammation.
  • Kidney dysfunction or changes in urine volume or color.
  • Brain disease, tingling skin, or local tremor.
  • Hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Severe liver inflammation.
  • Stomach and intestinal inflammation.
  • Redness and swelling of the tongue, 'hairy tongue' due to overgrown papillae, heartburn, sore throat, increased saliva.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Vertigo, headache.
  • Pain in several joints, weakness.
  • Irregular, strong, or fast heartbeat.
  • Chest discomfort, breathing difficulties, abnormally fast and shallow breathing, upper back pain.
  • Facial redness, blueness of face and lips, changes in skin texture, excessive sweating.
  • Genital itching in women.
  • Changes in blood cell counts.
  • Worsening of myasthenia gravis (a rare disease causing muscle weakness).
  • Abnormal movements.
  • Agitation.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to imipenem, cilastatin, any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems. Tell your doctor right away if you have a severe allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, or low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had bowel diseases (like colitis), kidney or urinary tract problems, liver problems, or brain or nervous system problems (like tremors or seizures).
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under one year old or for children with kidney problems.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. It should not be used during pregnancy unless your doctor thinks the benefits outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Small amounts can pass into breast milk, which may affect the baby.
  • This medicine can cause side effects like seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there, dizziness, drowsiness, and a spinning sensation, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines.
