How to Use

Dosage

Usually one 20 mg spray into one nostril for adults (18-65 years); some may use a 10 mg spray. For youth (12-17 years), one 10 mg spray into one nostril.

Method

Use only when a migraine has already started, not to prevent an attack. Insert the nozzle about 1 cm into one nostril. Breathe in gently through your nose while firmly pressing the blue button with your thumb.

Important

Do not use more than two sprays within a 24-hour period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Pain, pressure, tightness or unusual sensations (numbness, tingling, warmth, cold) in the chest, neck, or other body parts.
  • Irritation or burning feeling in the nose or throat, nosebleed.
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting) (can also be due to migraine).
  • Feeling tired or sleepy.
  • Dizziness, feeling weak, hot flashes.
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Muscle pain.
RARE
  • Changes in liver function (seen in blood tests).
  • Seizures, tremors, muscle spasms, stiff neck.
  • Vision problems (flashes, blurred vision, double vision, temporary or permanent loss of sight).
  • Heart problems (fast or slow heartbeat, irregular rhythm, chest pain, heart attack).
  • Raynaud's phenomenon (pale, blue skin, and pain in fingers, toes, ears, nose, or jaw when cold or stressed).
  • Feeling faint (due to low blood pressure).
  • Pain in the lower left abdomen with bloody diarrhea (ischemic colitis).
  • Diarrhea.
  • Pain or worsening pain at an injury or inflammation site (e.g., rheumatism, bowel inflammation).
  • Joint pain.
  • Feeling anxious.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Breast pain.
  • Allergic reactions (skin rash, hives, wheezing, swollen eyelids, face, or lips, fainting).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have heart problems like heart disease, chest pain, or have had a heart attack.
  • Do not use if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not use if you are taking other specific migraine medicines (like ergotamine or other 'triptan' medicines).

  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking certain antidepressants (MAOIs, SSRIs, or SNRIs).
  • If you feel chest pain or tightness after using Imigran, seek immediate medical help.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy, so do not drive or use machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (do not breastfeed for 12 hours after use).
  • Do not use Imigran to try and prevent a migraine attack, only when it has already started.
