How to Use

Dosage

For adults 18-65 years, the usual dose is one 20 mg spray into one nostril; for some, a 10 mg spray may be enough. For adolescents 12-17 years, the typical dose is one 10 mg spray into one nostril.

Method

Use Imigran nasal spray only after your migraine headache has started, not to prevent an attack. Follow the detailed instructions provided in the leaflet for proper use, which involves inserting the nozzle into one nostril and pressing the blue button while gently inhaling.

Important

Do not use more than two sprays within a 24-hour period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Unpleasant taste in the nose.
  • Pain, pressure, tightness, or unusual sensations (like numbness, tingling, warmth, or cold) in the chest, throat, or other body parts.
  • Irritation or burning sensation in the nose or throat, nosebleed.
  • Nausea (feeling sick) or vomiting.
  • Tiredness or drowsiness.
  • Dizziness, feeling weak, hot flushes.
  • Temporary rise in blood pressure.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Muscle pain.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itchy bumps (hives), wheezing, swollen eyelids, face, or lips, or collapsing.
  • Seizures, tremors, muscle spasms, stiff neck.
  • Vision problems such as flashing lights, reduced vision, double vision, or temporary/permanent loss of vision.
  • Heart problems, including fast or slow heartbeat, changes in heart rhythm, chest pain (angina pectoris), or heart attack.
  • Raynaud's phenomenon: pale or blue skin and/or cold or stress-induced pain in fingers, toes, ears, nose, or jaw.
  • Feeling faint (due to low blood pressure).
  • Pain in the lower left abdomen with bloody diarrhea (ischemic colitis).
  • Diarrhea.
  • Pain or worsening pain at a site of recent injury or inflammation (e.g., rheumatism or gut inflammation).
  • Joint pain.
  • Anxiety.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Changes in liver function (if you have a blood test to check liver function, tell your doctor you are using Imigran).
  • Breast pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Imigran if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have heart problems like ischemic heart disease, chest pain (angina), or if you have had a heart attack.
  • Do not use if you have circulation problems in your legs (peripheral vascular disease) or have had a stroke or mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not use if you have very high blood pressure that is not controlled, or severe liver disease.
  • Do not use with other migraine medicines containing ergotamine or other triptans, or if you have taken certain antidepressants (MAOIs) in the last two weeks.

  • If you are a heavy smoker, use nicotine replacement, are a man over 40, or a post-menopausal woman, talk to your doctor, as you may have a higher risk of heart disease.
  • If you have had seizures, or liver or kidney disease, or are allergic to sulfonamide antibiotics, tell your doctor.
  • If you experience chest pain or tightness after using Imigran, seek medical help immediately as this could be serious.
  • Do not breastfeed for 12 hours after using Imigran and discard any milk pumped during this time.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy; if so, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Using Imigran too often can make your headaches worse; talk to your doctor if this happens.
