How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults aged 18-65 is one injection (6 mg).

Method

Imigran is usually injected into the thigh.

Important

Do not use more than two Imigran injections within 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Temporary pain at the injection site.
  • Stinging, burning, redness, swelling, bruising, and bleeding at the injection site.
  • Feeling of pressure, tightness or pain in the chest, neck, or other body parts; strange feelings like numbness, tingling, or feeling hot or cold.
  • Nausea (feeling sick) or vomiting.
  • Tiredness or drowsiness.
  • Dizziness, feeling weak, hot flashes.
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Muscle pain.
RARE
  • Breast pain.
  • Changes in liver function (if you have a blood test to check your liver, tell your doctor or nurse you are using Imigran).
  • Seizures, tremors, muscle spasms, stiff neck.
  • Vision problems such as flashes of light, blurred vision, double vision, or temporary or permanent loss of vision (these can also happen during a migraine attack).
  • Heart problems, including a faster or slower heartbeat, changes in heart rhythm, chest pain (angina pectoris), or heart attack.
  • Pale or bluish skin, and/or cold- or stress-induced pain in fingers, toes, ears, nose, or jaw (Raynaud's syndrome).
  • Feeling faint (blood pressure may drop).
  • Pain in the lower left abdomen and bloody diarrhea (ischemic colitis).
  • Diarrhea.
  • Pain or worsening pain at the site of a recent injury or inflammation (like rheumatism or bowel inflammation).
  • Joint pain.
  • Anxiety.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Excessive sweating.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have heart problems like chest pain (angina), coronary artery disease, or if you have had a heart attack.
  • Do not use if you have poor circulation in your legs, causing cramp-like pain when walking.
  • Do not use if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or severe liver disease.

  • Do not use if you are taking other migraine medicines containing ergotamine or other triptans, or if you have taken MAO inhibitors (for depression) in the last two weeks.
  • Tell your doctor if you use certain antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs), as using them with Imigran may cause serotonin syndrome.
  • Using Imigran too often can make your headaches worse. Talk to your doctor if this happens.
  • If you feel chest pain or tightness after using Imigran, seek medical help immediately, especially if it doesn't go away or gets worse.
  • The syringe needle shield may contain latex, which can cause serious allergic reactions. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to latex.
  • Imigran injection is not recommended for children, teenagers under 18, or adults over 65 years old.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a baby, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. Do not breastfeed for 12 hours after using Imigran.
  • This medicine or your migraine symptoms can make you feel sleepy. If you feel sleepy, do not drive or use machines.
  • Immediately seek medical help if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction like rash, hives, wheezing, swollen eyelids, face or lips, or fainting after taking Imigran.
