How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose you need. Common starting doses are often 400 mg or 600 mg daily.

Method

Take the tablets with a meal, swallowing them whole with a large glass of water. You can break the tablet in half. If you cannot swallow whole tablets, dissolve them in a glass of still water or apple juice.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose. It can be up to 800 mg per day, usually taken in two doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fast weight gain or swelling (fluid retention)
  • Signs of infection like fever, chills, or sore throat
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising
  • Headache or feeling tired
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or indigestion
  • Skin rash
  • Muscle cramps, or pain in joints, muscles, or bones
  • Swelling in body parts like eyelids or ankles
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, or changes in taste
  • Dizziness or feeling weak
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Watery, itchy, red, or swollen eyes; blurred vision
  • Nosebleeds
  • Stomach pain or bloating, gas, heartburn, or constipation
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Numbness in hands or feet
  • Mouth sores; dry mouth, skin, or eyes
  • Changes in how your skin feels (more or less sensitive)
  • Hot flashes, chills, or night sweats
RARE
  • Painful red lumps or blisters on the skin
  • Cough, runny or blocked nose, sinus pain (signs of a cold or upper respiratory infection)
  • Severe headache with throbbing pain, nausea, or sensitivity to light (like a migraine)
  • Painful urination, fever, or blood in urine (signs of a urinary tract infection)
  • Feeling sad for a long time, losing interest (depression), or feeling anxious with a racing heart
  • Shaking or trembling, memory problems, or restless legs
  • Ringing in your ears (tinnitus) or high blood pressure
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Changes in nail color or brittle nails
  • Enlarged breasts (in men or women), or pain/heaviness in the testicles
  • Problems with erections, irregular periods, or lower sex drive
  • Feeling confused
  • Slower growth in children

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to imatinib or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have or have had liver, kidney, or heart disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had Hepatitis B infection, as this medicine can reactivate it.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you gain weight quickly, as this could be due to fluid retention.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor tells you to, as it can harm the baby.
