How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how many capsules to take. For adults, the usual starting dose is 100 mg, 400 mg, or 600 mg once a day.

Method

Take Imatinib Orion capsules with a meal and a large glass of water to help prevent stomach problems. Swallow the capsules whole. If you have trouble swallowing, you can open the capsules and mix the powder with a glass of water or apple juice.

Important

For adults, the daily dose should not exceed 800 mg. Your doctor will determine your maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion
  • Skin rash
  • Muscle cramps or pain in joints, muscles, or bones
  • Swelling, like around the eyes or ankles
  • Sudden weight gain (due to fluid retention)
  • Symptoms of infection like fever, chills, sore throat, or mouth sores
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, or changes in taste
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Eye discharge, itching, redness, swelling, increased tears, or blurred vision
  • Nosebleeds
  • Stomach pain or bloating, gas, heartburn, or constipation
  • Itching
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Numbness in hands or feet
  • Mouth sores
  • Joint pain with swelling
  • Dry mouth, dry skin, or dry eyes
  • Decreased or increased skin sensitivity
  • Hot flashes, chills, or night sweats
RARE
  • Chest pain or irregular heartbeat (signs of heart problems)
  • Cough, difficulty breathing, or pain when breathing (signs of lung problems)
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting (signs of low blood pressure)
  • Nausea with loss of appetite, dark urine, or yellow skin/eyes (signs of liver problems)
  • Severe skin rash with blisters on lips, eyes, skin, or mouth; peeling skin, fever, raised red or purplish patches, itching, burning, or blister-like rash
  • Severe stomach pain, blood in vomit, stool or urine; or black stools (signs of gastrointestinal problems)
  • Greatly reduced urination or feeling very thirsty (signs of kidney problems)
  • Severe headache, weakness or paralysis in limbs or face, speech problems, or sudden loss of consciousness (signs of nervous system disorders like brain bleeding or swelling)
  • Pale skin, tiredness, shortness of breath, or dark urine (signs of low red blood cells)
  • Eye pain or worsening vision, or bleeding in the eye
  • Bone or joint pain (signs of osteonecrosis)
  • Blisters on skin or mucous membranes (signs of pemphigus)
  • Coldness or numbness in fingers and toes (signs of Raynaud's syndrome)
  • Sudden swelling and redness of the skin (signs of cellulitis)
  • Hearing loss
  • Muscle weakness and cramps with irregular heartbeat (signs of changes in potassium levels in your blood)
  • Bruises
  • Abdominal pain with nausea
  • Muscle cramps with fever, reddish-brown urine, or pain/weakness in muscles (signs of muscle problems)
  • Pelvic pain, sometimes with nausea and vomiting, unexpected vaginal bleeding, dizziness or fainting due to low blood pressure (signs of ovary or uterus problems)
  • Nausea, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, cloudy urine, tiredness, and/or joint pain with abnormal lab test results
  • Blood clots in small blood vessels (thrombotic microangiopathy)
  • Confusion
  • Spasms and loss of consciousness (seizures)
  • Nail discoloration
  • Redness and/or swelling of palms and soles, possibly with tingling and burning pain
  • Painful and/or blistering skin lesions
  • Slow growth in children and adolescents

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to imatinib or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver, kidney, or heart problems.
  • If you have ever had Hepatitis B, tell your doctor, as Imatinib Orion can reactivate the infection.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you notice unusual bruising, bleeding, fever, feeling very tired, or confusion, as these could be signs of serious blood vessel damage.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you gain weight quickly, as this medicine can cause your body to hold too much fluid.

  • This medicine can make you more sensitive to the sun. Protect your skin by covering up and using high-SPF sunscreen.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Women who can get pregnant should use effective birth control during treatment and for 15 days after.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel these effects.
