How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose based on your condition and age. For adults with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, the usual starting dose is 400 mg or 600 mg once daily. For children, the total daily dose should not be more than 800 mg (for CML) or 600 mg (for Ph+ ALL).

Method

Take this medicine with food to help avoid stomach problems. Swallow the tablets whole with a large glass of water. If you can't swallow them, you can dissolve a 100 mg tablet in about 50 ml of still water or apple juice and drink it right away.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults varies depending on the condition, with the highest dose being 800 mg per day, usually given in two separate doses (morning and evening).

  • Headache or tiredness
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or indigestion

  • Muscle cramps or pain in joints, muscles, or bones during or after treatment

RARE
  • Painful red lumps on the skin, skin pain, or redness of the skin (inflammation of subcutaneous fat)
  • Cough, runny or stuffy nose, feeling of pressure or pain when pressing above the eyes or sides of the nose, sneezing, sore throat, headache (signs of upper respiratory infection)
  • Severe throbbing headache, often on one side of the head, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound (signs of migraine)
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Pain or burning sensation when urinating, fever, pain in the groin or pelvic area, red or cloudy urine (signs of urinary tract infection)
  • Joint pain and swelling (signs of arthralgia)
  • Persistent sadness and loss of interest that prevents normal activities (signs of depression)
  • Feelings of fear and worry with physical symptoms like palpitations, sweating, trembling, and dry mouth (signs of anxiety)
  • Sleepiness, excessive sleep
  • Trembling or shaking movements (tremor)
  • Impaired memory
  • Irresistible urge to move legs (restless legs syndrome)
  • Hearing sounds in the ears that have no external source (e.g., ringing, humming) (tinnitus)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Belching
  • Inflammation of the lips
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Increased sweating
  • Skin discoloration
  • Brittle nails
  • Red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair roots, possibly with pain, itching, or burning sensation (folliculitis)
  • Peeling or flaking rash (exfoliative dermatitis)
  • Breast enlargement (may occur in men or women)
  • Dull pain and/or pressure in the testicles or lower abdomen; pain during urination, sexual intercourse, or ejaculation; blood in urine (signs of testicular swelling)
  • Inability to get or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction)
  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Difficulty achieving/maintaining sexual arousal
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Nipple pain
  • General feeling of being unwell (malaise)
  • Viral infection like cold sores
  • Lower back pain due to kidney disease
  • More frequent urination than usual
  • Increased appetite
  • Pain or burning sensation in the upper abdomen and/or chest (heartburn), nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, feeling of fullness and bloating, black stools (signs of stomach ulcer)
  • Joint and muscle stiffness
  • Abnormal laboratory test results
  • Confusion
  • Muscle spasms and impaired consciousness (convulsions)
  • Nail discoloration
  • Redness and/or swelling of palms and soles, possibly with tingling and burning pain
  • Painful and/or blistering skin lesions
  • Slowed growth in children and adolescents

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to imatinib or any other ingredients in the tablets. Tell your doctor immediately if you have an allergy.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver, kidney, or heart problems, as this medicine may affect these organs.
  • If you have ever had Hepatitis B, this medicine could make the infection active again, which can be very serious. Your doctor will check you for this.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you experience unusual bleeding, bruising, fever, tiredness, or confusion, as these could be signs of damage to blood vessels.
  • This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Protect your skin from sunlight with clothing and high-SPF sunscreen, especially for children.

  • If you gain weight very quickly, tell your doctor immediately, as this medicine can cause your body to hold onto too much fluid (severe swelling).
