How to Use

Dosage

For anxiety, adults typically take 50 mg daily in three doses (e.g., 12.5 mg, 12.5 mg, and 25 mg). For itching, adults take 25 mg about an hour before bedtime, and if needed, 2-3 times a day. For children and adolescents over 6 years old, 1-2 mg per kg of body weight, divided into several doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets with enough water. You can take them with or without food. The 25 mg tablet can be divided in half.

Important

For adults and children over 40 kg, the maximum daily dose is 100 mg. For children under 40 kg, the maximum daily dose is 2 mg per kg of body weight per day. For elderly people, the maximum daily dose is 50 mg per day.

  • Seizures, uncontrolled movements
  • Problems with vision, blurred vision
  • Heart problems including very fast heartbeat or heart stopping, low blood pressure
  • Constipation, vomiting
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Itching, hives, skin rash or inflammation
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Severe allergic shock (anaphylaxis)
  • Difficulty breathing (bronchospasm)
  • Low number of platelets in blood
  • Liver inflammation
  • Aggression, depression, repeated uncontrolled muscle twitches (tics)
  • Abnormal muscle stiffness, tingling or numbness
  • Irregular heartbeat and changes on ECG (QT prolongation, Torsade de Pointes)
  • Uncontrolled eye movements
  • Diarrhea
  • Bedwetting
  • Extreme weakness, swelling due to fluid retention (edema)
  • Weight gain
  • Fainting
  • Skin blisters (pemphigoid) on arms, legs, stomach, and mucous membranes

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to hydroxyzine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have or have had heart problems, a very slow heartbeat, or an abnormal heart rhythm on an ECG (QT prolongation).
  • Tell your doctor if you take other medicines that affect your heart rhythm.
  • If you experience heart symptoms like palpitations, breathing difficulties, or fainting, stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help.
  • If you have kidney or liver disease, you may need a lower dose.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment, as it can make side effects worse.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to react and concentrate, so be careful when driving or using machines.
  • If you are going for an allergy test, stop taking this medicine at least 5 days before the test.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. A long-acting. Do not use as a hypnotic or sedative. Increases risk for QT prolongation. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include tachycardia, confusion and cognitive impairment. Increases risk of falls. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
