How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on your pain, age, and weight. For single doses, typically 1-2 mg given slowly into a vein or under the skin every 3-4 hours. For continuous infusion, typically 0.15-0.45 mg per hour.

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a vein or under the skin, or as a continuous drip (infusion).

Important

The doctor will carefully adjust your dose to control your pain and determine your maximum daily dose. Never take more than your doctor prescribes.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, feeling more sleepy than usual
  • Constipation
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Itchy skin
  • Unusual weakness
  • Confusion
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dry mouth
  • Sweating
  • Rash
  • Difficulty urinating, urgent need to urinate
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Stomach pain, abdominal discomfort
  • Skin reactions at the injection site
RARE
  • Feeling unwell or uncomfortable, intense happiness
  • Headache, trembling, muscle twitching, tingling in hands and feet
  • Small pupils, vision problems
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Digestive problems
  • Decreased sex drive, inability to get or keep an erection
  • Needing more of the medicine for the same effect (tolerance)
  • Withdrawal symptoms (e.g., agitation, anxiety, nervousness, trouble sleeping, shaking, stomach problems)
  • Tiredness
  • Depression, nightmares
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, changes in taste
  • Can affect liver blood tests
  • Drug dependence
  • Seizures, feeling very sleepy or calm
  • Slow heartbeat, irregular heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing, wheezing
  • Can affect pancreas blood tests
  • Facial flushing
  • Increased pain sensitivity (hyperalgesia)
  • Bowel problem where the small intestine stops working properly (paralytic ileus)
  • Swelling in hands, ankles, or feet; skin irritation and hardening at the injection site
  • Aggression
  • Hot flashes
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies
  • Sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to hydromorphone or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe breathing problems or a history of seizures.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are taking certain antidepressants (MAO inhibitors) or have taken them in the last two weeks.
  • Using alcohol or other sedative medicines at the same time can cause serious side effects like severe drowsiness or breathing difficulties.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly; always talk to your doctor first to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
