How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on your pain, previous pain medicine, age, and weight. For adults and adolescents over 12 years, a typical dose for injection into a vein is 1-1.5 mg, given slowly over 2-3 minutes, repeatable every 3-4 hours. For injection under the skin, it's 1-2 mg, repeatable every 3-4 hours. For continuous infusion, typical starting doses are 0.15-0.45 mg per hour.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein (intravenous) or under the skin (subcutaneous) by a doctor or nurse. It can be a single injection or a continuous infusion.

Important

Your doctor will gradually increase the dose until your pain is relieved and will determine the maximum daily dose for you.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to hydromorphone or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems or severe lung disease (like COPD).
  • Do not use if you have severe stomach pain, bowel problems (like a blocked gut), or if you are unconscious.
  • Do not use if you have taken certain MAO inhibitor medicines in the last 2 weeks.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a head injury, a history of seizures, or if you have struggled with alcohol or drug dependence.

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart, blood pressure, gallbladder, pancreas, bowel, prostate, adrenal gland, thyroid, kidney, or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have mental health issues (like depression or anxiety) or if you smoke.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 12 years old.
  • Using this medicine repeatedly can lead to addiction and can be life-threatening if you take too much (overdose).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • This medicine can cause breathing problems during sleep, like sleep apnea (pauses in breathing) or low oxygen levels.
  • Avoid alcohol while using this medicine, as it can make you very drowsy.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor specifically tells you to.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy and affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
