How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 15-25 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. The first dose in the morning is larger.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water, without food.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose for adults is 25 mg.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Stomach ache when starting or switching medicine (usually temporary)
  • Nausea when starting or switching medicine (usually temporary)
  • Fatigue when starting or switching medicine (usually temporary)
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Problems controlling blood sugar
  • Swelling due to salt and water retention, high blood pressure, low blood potassium
  • Changes in blood potassium leading to high pH in body tissues/fluids
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Weak bones that break easily (osteoporosis)
  • Thickening of the heart muscle in premature babies
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling very happy or overly excited (euphoria)
  • Losing touch with reality (psychosis) with false senses (hallucinations) and confusion
  • Excessive excitement and overactivity (mania)
  • Clouding in the back of the eye's lens (cataract)
  • Increased pressure in the eye (glaucoma)
  • Blurred vision
  • Bloating and worsening of stomach ulcers
  • Stomach pain
  • Symptoms resembling Cushing's syndrome (e.g., facial redness, acne, stretch marks, bruises, excessive hair)
  • Slow or poor wound healing
  • In children and adolescents, long-term use can affect bone development and slow growth.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you or your child are allergic to hydrocortisone or any other ingredient in it.
  • If you or your child have an Addisonian crisis, severe vomiting, or feel very ill, you might need a hydrocortisone injection. Your doctor will show you how to give it in an emergency.
  • You might need to temporarily increase your dose if you or your child have a short illness (like an infection or fever) or a stressful situation (like surgery). Ask your doctor how to handle this.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can make you or your child very sick.
  • Always tell your doctor or dentist if you or your child are taking this medicine before any surgery or vaccinations.

  • Grapefruit juice and licorice can affect how this medicine works, so discuss your diet with your doctor.
