How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 100 mg of hydrocortisone. If needed, an extra 50–100 mg can be given 1, 3, 6, and 10 hours after the first dose. For shock, 250–1000 mg is given as a slow injection into a vein.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Hydrocortisone Panpharma as an injection into a vein or a muscle.

Important

High doses of corticosteroid treatment should generally not be continued for more than 48–72 hours.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe crisis related to a tumor of the adrenal gland, infections due to a weakened immune system, or a specific type of blood vessel tumor (Kaposi's sarcoma).
  • Allergic reactions, including severe ones.
  • Cushing's syndrome-like symptoms (weight gain, moon face, fat in the neck, muscle weakness, thin skin), or reduced production of certain hormones.
  • Fluid and sodium retention in the body, problems with sugar tolerance, or abnormal blood pH due to potassium deficiency.
  • Psychiatric or psychotic disorders (e.g., strong feeling of well-being, insomnia, mood swings, depression), increased brain pressure, or seizures.
  • Cataracts, bulging eyes, or fluid under the retina.
  • Heart failure, thickened heart muscle (in premature babies), blood clots, or high blood pressure.
  • Stomach/intestinal ulcers, pancreatitis, esophagitis, intestinal perforation, red/purple skin spots, bruises, or thinning skin.
  • Muscle weakness, bone disorders (e.g., osteoporosis, fractures), growth retardation, irregular menstruation, or poor wound healing.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a systemic fungal infection (a fungal infection affecting your whole body).
  • Do not use if you have recently had or are about to receive a vaccine.
  • Do not use if you have keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) caused by herpes simplex virus.
  • Do not use if you have acute psychosis.
