How to Use

Dosage

Adults typically take 15-30 mg daily, divided into two or three doses. Your doctor will tell you the exact amount.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth. The tablets can be split in half or quarters (10 mg) or in half (20 mg) if your doctor prescribes a smaller dose.

  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Joint pain
  • Tiredness/Fatigue
RARE
  • Loss of touch with reality (psychosis), seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), and confusion
  • Feeling overly excited or intensely happy (mania)
  • Strong feelings of happiness and enthusiasm (euphoria)
  • Stomach pain (gastritis) or feeling sick
  • Changes in blood potassium levels, leading to excessive alkalinity in body tissues or fluids
  • Increased risk of infections (like tuberculosis, fungal, or viral infections including herpes)
  • Diabetes or problems with blood sugar levels
  • Swelling due to salt and water retention, increased blood pressure, and low potassium levels in the blood
  • Mood changes, such as feeling overly excited or losing touch with reality
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma), clouding of the eye lens (cataract)
  • Heartburn and worsening of existing stomach ulcers
  • Weakening of bones (which can lead to fractures)
  • Stretch marks, bruises, acne-like rash, increased facial hair, slow wound healing

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have an Addisonian crisis and are vomiting or feel very unwell, you may need a hydrocortisone injection.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can make you very sick.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an infection or feel unwell, as you might need a higher dose temporarily.
  • Inform your surgeon or anaesthetist that you are taking this medicine if you are going to have surgery.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience swelling or difficulty breathing after taking this medicine, as it could be a severe allergic reaction.
  • Hydrocortisone can cause diabetes. Tell your doctor right away if you feel very thirsty or need to urinate a lot.
  • Some people feel anxious, depressed, or confused when taking hydrocortisone. Tell your doctor if you notice any unusual behavior or suicidal thoughts after starting this medicine.
