How to Use

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea

RARE
  • Loss of touch with reality (psychosis), with hallucinations and confusion (delirium)
  • Extreme over-excitement and over-reaction (mania)
  • Intense feelings of happiness and enthusiasm (euphoria)
  • Mood changes
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Stomach pain (gastritis)
  • Worsening of existing stomach ulcers and heartburn
  • Changes in blood potassium levels, leading to high alkalinity of body tissues or fluids (hypokalemic alkalosis)
  • Salt and water retention, causing swelling and high blood pressure, and low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia)
  • Increased risk of infections (tuberculosis, fungal, and viral infections including herpes)
  • Diabetes or problems with blood sugar levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma), clouding of the eye lens (cataract)
  • Weakening of bones (can cause fractures)
  • Stretch marks, bruises, acne-like rash, increased facial hair growth, slow wound healing

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have an Addisonian crisis, or if you are vomiting or very unwell, you might need a hydrocortisone injection. Talk to your doctor.
  • If you have long-term digestive problems (like chronic diarrhea) that affect how your body absorbs food, your doctor might change your medicine or monitor you more closely.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can make you very ill.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an infection or feel generally unwell, as you might need a temporary higher dose.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience swelling or difficulty breathing after taking this medicine, as it could be a severe allergic reaction.
  • Hydrocortisone can cause diabetes. Tell your doctor immediately if you have extreme thirst or need to urinate a lot.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other vision problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience unusual behavior, anxiety, depression, confusion, or thoughts of self-harm after starting this medicine.
