How to Use

Dosage

Take as prescribed by your doctor; the dosage is individual.

Method

Swallow the tablets with enough fluid, such as a glass of water, and take them regularly. The tablets can be divided into two equal doses.

Important

Take the maximum daily dose prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood potassium levels
  • High blood uric acid levels
  • High blood sugar
  • High blood fat levels with high doses
  • Dizziness, headache, weakness, fatigue
RARE
  • Blood electrolyte disturbances, such as high calcium, low magnesium, sodium, chloride, and/or phosphate
  • Loss of appetite
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Low blood pressure when standing up
  • Vomiting, nausea, severe stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation
  • Rash, hives
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Low white blood cell and/or platelet count
  • Anemia
  • Allergic reaction, red spots on skin
  • Sleep disturbances, depression, tingling/numbness
  • Vision disturbances
  • Vasculitis, allergic lung inflammation, pulmonary edema, pancreatitis, hepatitis, interstitial nephritis, intrahepatic cholestasis
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Kidney failure
  • Impotence
  • Fever
  • Acute respiratory distress (signs include severe shortness of breath, fever, weakness, and confusion)
  • Skin and lip cancer (non-melanoma skin cancer)
  • Eye pain due to high eye pressure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide, other ingredients in this medicine, or if you have a sulfa allergy.
  • Do not take if you have too low potassium levels or too high calcium levels in your blood.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver failure.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have disturbances in your body's fluid or electrolyte balance.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart failure and severe swelling.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have Addison's disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have gout.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus).
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience blurred vision or eye pain.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you develop severe shortness of breath or breathing difficulties after taking Hydrex tablets.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had skin cancer or if you develop an unexpected skin lesion during treatment. Protect your skin from sunlight and UV rays.
  • Hydrex is not recommended during pregnancy as it may cause harm to the fetus and newborn.
  • Do not use Hydrex tablets during breastfeeding.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have an intolerance to some sugars, as this medicine contains lactose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Effectiveness is reduced in renal impairment. Consider risk of orthostatic hypotension and hyponatraemia and -kalemia. (updated 19.5.2025)
