How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 1 to 3 milligrams (mg).

Method

It is given as an injection or infusion into a vein. An injection takes about 30 seconds, and an infusion takes about 5 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 9 milligrams (mg).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Constipation (difficulty passing stool)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Diarrhea (loose, watery stools)
  • Changes in how your liver works, shown by blood tests
RARE
  • Rashes, allergic skin reactions, or hives (red, itchy bumps)
  • Unusual uncontrolled movements, such as shaking, stiff muscles, or muscle spasms
  • Changes in your heart rhythm and in your heart's electrical activity (seen on an ECG)
  • Serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, high blood pressure, sweating, fast heart rate, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, chills, muscle tremors, jerking, stiffness, poor coordination, and restlessness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to granisetron or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have problems with bowel movements, like a blocked bowel.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, are taking cancer medicines that can harm your heart, or have imbalanced salt levels (like potassium, sodium, calcium) in your body.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines for nausea and vomiting called 5-HT3 antagonists, such as dolasetron or ondansetron.
  • Be aware of Serotonin Syndrome, a serious reaction. The risk is higher if you take this medicine with certain other medicines like antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs).
