How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide the right dose for you, based on your age, weight, health, and why you need it.

Method

The solution is given as an infusion into a vein, usually in your arm, using a plastic tube and a needle. Your doctor may choose another method.

Important

The doctor or nurse will carefully control the infusion rate to prevent overdose and ensure it is not given too quickly or too often.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Allergic reaction (signs include trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, fever, hives, rash, or skin redness).
  • Low levels of salt (sodium) in your blood, which can cause confusion, seizures, brain swelling, and can be serious.
  • Higher than normal blood sugar.
  • Sugar in your urine.
  • Reactions at the infusion site like fever, fluid leaking out of the vein, a blood clot, irritation or swelling of the vein, pain, redness, or burning.
  • Chills.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to glucose (sugar) or corn, or if you already have very high blood sugar.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, kidney disease, heart problems, or lung problems.
  • Inform your doctor about any recent head injuries, a stroke, or high pressure in your head.
  • Let your doctor know if you have too much fluid in your body, low salt levels in your blood, or if you take medicines that affect body fluids.
