How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the exact dose and how often you get it, based on your age, weight, and health.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a drip into a vein or an injection under the skin.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose is 6 grams of glucose per kilogram of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Increased urination (polyuria)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Dehydration
  • Mineral imbalance (such as low potassium, magnesium, phosphate)
RARE
  • Fever
  • Infection at the injection site
  • Local pain or reaction
  • Vein irritation or inflammation (phlebitis)
  • Solution leaking outside the vein (extravasation), which can damage tissues
RARE
  • Too much fluid in the body (hypervolemia)
  • Swelling (edema) due to overdose
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Seizures
  • Drowsiness (lethargy)
  • Vomiting
  • Very low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia), which can lead to brain swelling, brain damage, and death
RARE
  • High blood sugar
  • Glucose in urine
  • Fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to glucose or its ingredients, or if you have severe diabetes, very high blood sugar, low potassium levels, too much acid in your body, or severe kidney or heart problems.
  • It is also not recommended if you've recently had a stroke or head injury, as high blood sugar can worsen brain damage.
  • If you are malnourished, especially due to alcohol misuse or long-term fasting, you may need extra Vitamin B1 before getting this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause low sodium levels in your blood, which may lead to headaches, seizures, coma, and brain swelling, potentially being life-threatening. Children and women of childbearing age are at higher risk.
