Possible Side Effects

  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, and throat
  • Fever
  • Hives
  • Rash
  • Redness of the skin
  • Chills
  • Low blood sodium (hyponatremia), which can lead to brain swelling, brain damage, or death.
  • Low blood potassium (hypokalemia)
  • Low blood magnesium (hypomagnesemia)
  • Low blood phosphate (hypophosphatemia)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Too much fluid in blood vessels (hemodilution and hypervolemia)
  • Sugar in urine (glucosuria)
  • Fever, feverish reaction
  • Infection at the injection site
  • Leaking of infusion fluid into tissues outside the vein (extravasation), which can damage tissue and cause scarring.
  • Blood clot formation (venous thrombosis) at the injection site, causing pain, swelling, or redness.
  • Irritation and inflammation of the vein (phlebitis), causing redness, pain, burning, and swelling.
  • Local pain or reaction (redness or swelling at the injection site)
  • Shaking
  • Sweating

Important Warnings

  • You should not receive this medicine if you have uncontrolled diabetes or a coma caused by high blood sugar.
  • Do not take this if you have too much fluid in your blood or body (e.g., brain or lungs), or if your blood is too acidic.
  • Severe kidney or heart failure prevents this treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, kidney disease, a severe illness that started recently, high pressure in your head, a head injury, stroke, heart or lung disease, reduced urine, low sodium in your blood, or a corn allergy.
  • Also tell your doctor if you have a condition that raises vasopressin hormone levels, as this can increase the risk of low blood sodium and brain swelling.
