How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your age, weight, and health condition.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into a vein.

Important

Do not receive more than 40 ml per kg of body weight per day (2 grams of glucose per kg of body weight per day).

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Unusual levels of salts in your blood (like low potassium).
  • Low salt levels in your blood (hyponatremia).
  • Brain swelling, which can lead to brain damage.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if your blood sugar is too high and needs a lot of insulin (more than 6 units per hour) to control.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis).
  • Do not use this medicine if you have too much fluid in your body (hypotonic or isotonic hyperhydration).
  • Do not use this medicine if you have sudden heart failure.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have fluid in your lungs (pulmonary edema).

  • This medicine is usually not given if you have had a stroke recently, unless your doctor thinks it's truly needed for your recovery.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, problems with how your body uses sugar (for example, after surgery or an injury), or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are malnourished or don't have enough B vitamins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have problems with fluid in your brain (like from an infection or a head injury).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition or are taking medicines that might cause low sodium levels in your blood, as this can lead to headaches, nausea, seizures, extreme tiredness, coma, and brain swelling.
