How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will calculate your dose based on your body size, usually 1,000–1,250 mg per square meter.

Method

It is given as a drip into a vein (infusion) and takes about 30 minutes.

Important

Your doctor determines the maximum daily dose based on your health and blood tests.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash, itching, or fever
  • Feeling tired, weak, dizzy, or pale (due to low red blood cells)
  • Bleeding from gums, nose, mouth, prolonged bleeding, red urine, or unexpected bruises (due to low platelets)
  • Low white blood cell count (increased infection risk, fever with low white blood cells)
  • Mild breathing difficulties (usually temporary)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite
  • Hair loss
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Blood or protein in your urine
  • Mouth sores, pain, redness, or swelling in the mouth
  • Swelling in ankles, fingers, feet, or face
  • Headache, insomnia, or drowsiness
  • Cough, runny nose
  • Sweating
  • Muscle or back pain
  • Infections
RARE
  • Severe breathing problems (e.g., lung scarring, fluid in lungs, wheezing)
  • Irregular heartbeat, heart failure, or heart attack (severe chest pain)
  • Severe kidney or liver failure
  • Stroke
  • Low blood pressure
  • Skin problems like peeling, ulcers, blisters, severe rash, or sunburn-like reaction on previously radiated skin
  • Reactions at the injection site
  • Gangrene of fingers or toes
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with severe rash, swelling (face, lips, tongue), trouble breathing, wheezing, and fast heart rate
  • Generalized swelling, shortness of breath, or weight gain due to fluid leaking from blood vessels into tissues
  • Headache with vision changes, confusion, or seizures
  • Increased platelet count
  • Inflammation of the large intestine or blood clots in small blood vessels
  • Sepsis (bacterial toxins in blood harming organs)
  • Accumulation of eosinophils in the lungs, or skin redness and swelling

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to gemcitabine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • You will have blood tests before and during treatment to check your kidney and liver function and blood cell counts.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had liver, heart, blood vessel, or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had or will have radiation therapy.

  • Tell your doctor if you have recently been vaccinated.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores.
  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy.
  • Male patients should not father children during treatment or for 6 months afterwards; consider sperm banking.
  • This medicine may make you drowsy, especially with alcohol. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
