How to Use

Dosage

The amount you receive and how long you receive it depends on how much blood or fluid you have lost and your medical condition.

Method

Gelofusine is given as a drip directly into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum dose based on your individual needs and will carefully monitor you to prevent fluid overload.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decreased red blood cells and proteins in the blood.
  • Blood does not clot as well, and bleeding may be heavier than before.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, including breathing difficulties, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, a tight feeling in the chest or throat, abdominal pain, and swelling of the neck and face.
  • Rapid heart rate.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fever, chills.
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain.
  • Decreased oxygen in the blood, which can cause dizziness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Gelofusine if you are allergic to gelatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to the allergen called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), red meat (mammalian meat), or offal.
  • Do not use if you have too much blood volume or fluid in your body.
  • Do not use if you have a certain type of heart failure (acute congestive heart failure).
  • Tell your doctor if you have allergic diseases like asthma, heart problems, high blood pressure, fluid in your lungs, or severe kidney disease, as these conditions may worsen with large infusions.
