How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose based on your weight, age, kidney function, blood counts, and the specific condition being treated.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein (intravenously) by a doctor or nurse. Each infusion usually takes about one hour.

Important

Treatment typically starts with one or two infusions daily. If two infusions are given per day, this usually continues for up to 21 days. After that, your doctor may prescribe one infusion daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low white blood cell count (with signs of infection like sore throat, mouth sores, or fever)
  • Low red blood cell count (with signs like shortness of breath, tiredness, fast heartbeat, or pale skin)
  • Yeast infection or thrush
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (e.g., sinus infection, tonsillitis)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Feeling of shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rash (eczema)
  • Feeling of tiredness
  • Fever
RARE
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis), with symptoms like fever, chills, fast heartbeat, confusion, and slurred speech
  • Low platelet count, leading to easier bleeding or bruising, blood in urine or stools, or bleeding gums; bleeding can be severe
  • Severely low blood cell count
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with severe stomach pain that spreads to the back
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Flu
  • Urinary tract infection, with symptoms like fever, frequent urination, and pain during urination
  • Skin or subcutaneous tissue infection
  • Mild allergic reaction, with symptoms like red and itchy skin
  • Weight loss
  • Feeling depressed, anxious, or confused
  • Sleep problems
  • Feeling of weakness or numbness in hands or feet, which may affect balance
  • Changes in sensation, such as tingling, itching, pricking, or burning
  • Changes in taste
  • Chills
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis), eye pain, or vision problems
  • Ear pain
  • Low blood pressure, which can lead to dizziness or weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Constipation, gas, indigestion, abdominal pain, or bloated stomach
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Liver and kidney problems detected by lab tests
  • Night sweats
  • Itching, rash
  • Hair loss
  • Back, muscle, or joint pain; muscle cramps
  • Dizziness or weakness, general feeling of being unwell
  • Skin reaction at the injection site, such as inflammation, pain, and swelling
  • Bone marrow failure (inability of bone marrow to produce blood cells)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Unusual thoughts or feelings, loss of touch with reality
  • Kidney dysfunction
  • Feeling agitated
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Deafness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hives, dry skin
  • Blood in urine
  • Male infertility
  • Chest pain
  • Severe allergic reaction, with symptoms like red itchy skin, swelling of the throat, face, lips or mouth, and difficulty swallowing or breathing. Seek medical help immediately.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding. You must stop breastfeeding before starting this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to other antiviral medicines like acyclovir, valacyclovir, penciclovir, or famciclovir.
  • Your doctor will check your blood counts before and during treatment if you have low white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets.
  • Tell your doctor if you have previously had blood count problems due to other medicines.

  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may give you a lower dose and check your blood counts more often.
  • Tell your doctor if you are receiving radiation therapy.
  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy as it can harm the unborn baby. Women who can become pregnant must use effective birth control during and for at least 30 days after treatment. Men with partners who can become pregnant must use barrier contraception during and for at least 90 days after treatment.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to have children, as it can temporarily or permanently stop sperm production in men. Discuss this with your doctor if you plan to have children.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy, dizzy, confused, or shaky, or cause balance problems or seizures. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these effects.
