How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 8 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole. Do not chew or crush them. Take your dose once a day in the morning with water or another liquid, preferably with food. Drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration.

Important

The maximum dose is 24 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Decreased appetite, weight loss
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there)
  • Depression
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Muscle tremors or spasms
  • Headache
  • Severe tiredness, weakness, or general feeling of illness
  • Severe drowsiness and low energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Falls
  • Injuries
  • Heart problems (e.g., slow or irregular heartbeat, palpitations)
RARE
  • Allergic reaction
  • Dehydration
  • Tingling or numbness of the skin
  • Changes in taste
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Persistent ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Flushing
  • Retching
  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle weakness
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Seizures
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to galantamine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you notice severe skin reactions, such as blisters, peeling skin, or a rash with pus-filled bumps.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you notice heart problems, such as a very slow or irregular heartbeat.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience seizures.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD. Consider adverse effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions. Avoid concomitant use of anticholinergic medicines. (updated 18.3.2024)
